In response to the controversy caused by her father Will Smith’s slap row at the Oscars in 2022, singer Willow Smith broke her silence. Will slapped comedian Chris Rock after he made a joke about the shaved head of his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. The 21-year-old singer recalled the incident and revealed in an interview that her own troubles “rocked her more” than the aftermath.
Will Smith apologized to Chris Rock twice last month, the second time in a video posted on his Instagram account. He apologized to Chris’ family, especially his mother Rose, in the video and made it clear that his wife hadn’t asked him to make the decision on Oscars night. The actor added that he attempted to contact Chris but that the comic was not yet prepared to speak.
Willow explained to Billboard that she views her entire family as being human and that she loves and accepts them in all of their humanness. Because of the position we have, sometimes our humanity isn’t respected, and we’re required to behave in a way that doesn’t support a healthy human life or promote honesty.
Will Smith has been prohibited from the Academy for the following 10 years as a result of the event. Following the actor’s resignation from the Academy, a decision was taken. A few minutes after the uproar, he received the best actor Oscar for his performance in the movie King Richard.
Will Smith had previously sent a letter regarding the issue. “Violence is poisonous and harmful in all of its manifestations. My conduct at the Academy Awards last night was improper and unacceptable. Jokes at my expense are commonplace, but one regarding Jada’s health was too much for me to take, and I lost it emotionally,” he wrote in an excerpt from his initial apology.
