France has been provisionally selected to host the 2030 Winter Olympics and Paralympics.
The bid from the French Alps, which was identified as the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) preferred choice in June, received approval on Wednesday. This approval is contingent upon France providing the necessary financial guarantees.
President Emmanuel Macron of France has announced that he will not appoint a new government until after the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, which commence this week.
In his statement, Macron affirmed: “I confirm the full commitment of the French nation and assure you that I will ask the next prime minister to prioritize not only this guarantee but also the enactment of an Olympic law in the new government’s agenda.
“Seven years ago, we made a similar commitment for the Paris 2024 Olympics, and we delivered. We will do the same for the 2030 Winter Olympics.”
This will mark the fourth occasion that France has hosted the Winter Olympics, the last being in Albertville in 1992.
Additionally, Salt Lake City, Utah, has been selected to host the 2034 Winter Games.
