A massive glacial collapse in the Himalayas triggered catastrophic flash floods across parts of Nepal and Tibet, unleashing torrents of water, mud, rock and ice that swept through valleys, villages and border settlements, leaving hundreds dead and more than a thousand people missing.
The disaster began at around 8.37am on Wednesday when a huge section of a glacier in Nepal’s Langtang National Park, roughly 60 km north of Kathmandu and close to the Nepal-China border, broke away and crashed onto the valley floor. The force of the collapse was so powerful that the event was initially mistaken for an earthquake. The US Geological Survey later determined that the seismic activity was generated by the collapse of glacial ice and rock rather than by an earthquake. It recorded the event as equivalent to a magnitude 5.2 seismic event.
The collapse set off a chain reaction in the mountainous region. A vast quantity of ice, water, rocks and sediment rushed into the river system, swelling waterways including the Lhende Khola, Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers. Experts said the water level in the Trishuli river rose by as much as nine metres within only half an hour, creating a rapidly moving wall of debris that left communities with little time to escape.
The resulting flood caused extensive destruction on both sides of the border. Homes, roads, bridges, vehicles and power infrastructure were swept away or buried under thick layers of mud. At the Gyirong border crossing between Nepal and Tibet, dramatic footage showed a huge surge of mud and water crashing into buildings and carrying away buses and other vehicles as people attempted to flee.
The disaster struck an area that attracts large numbers of tourists, trekkers and pilgrims, including people travelling towards the sacred Mount Kailash and Mansarovar region. Consequently, hundreds of foreign nationals were among those reported missing. Nepalese authorities said Indian, American, Australian, British and Canadian nationals were among those unaccounted for, while Chinese authorities also reported hundreds missing on the Tibet side.
Rescue operations have been complicated by the destruction of roads and bridges and the difficult Himalayan terrain. Nepalese security forces have been using helicopters to evacuate survivors and search for people trapped in isolated areas. Emergency teams have also recovered bodies far downstream from the main disaster zone, highlighting the extraordinary force and reach of the floodwaters.
The cause of the glacial collapse is still being examined by scientists. Satellite observations indicated that a substantial section of ice had broken away from a glacier at an elevation of about 5,200 metres before plunging roughly 1,200 metres to the valley floor. Preliminary analysis also suggested significant snow and ice melt in the area in the 24 hours before the incident, although researchers have cautioned that more weather and ground data is required to determine exactly what triggered the collapse.
Scientists are also examining the possible role of climate change. The Himalayas are warming at roughly twice the global average, contributing to glacier retreat and the degradation of mountain permafrost. Permafrost can help stabilise steep mountain slopes, and its weakening may increase the likelihood of landslides, avalanches and other cascading hazards. Experts, however, have warned that it is too early to establish a direct link between climate change and this particular glacier collapse.
The wider Himalayan region has become increasingly vulnerable to glacier-related disasters. Nepal alone has more than 2,000 glacial lakes, with 21 considered potentially dangerous. As glaciers melt and retreat, increasing quantities of water can accumulate behind unstable natural barriers, creating the risk of sudden glacial lake outburst floods.
Authorities have also warned of the possibility of further flooding in the affected region because of water and debris blockages created during the disaster. Rescue agencies and international organisations have been mobilising emergency supplies, medical assistance and personnel as teams continue searching for survivors.
The Nepal-Tibet disaster has therefore highlighted not only the devastating power of sudden glacial collapses but also the growing risks faced by communities, infrastructure and travellers living or operating in the rapidly changing Himalayan environment.
