Originally established by royal charter on December 31, 1600, under Queen Elizabeth I, the historical East India Company grew from a modest trading venture into a formidable and controversial force that reshaped global trade, warfare, and colonial governance. It wielded vast commercial and military power, eventually administering large swaths of the Indian subcontinent and other regions in Asia for the British Crown. The brand name lay dormant for decades until it was revived in 2010 by British-Indian entrepreneur Sanjiv Mehta, who acquired the rights and repositioned it as a luxury lifestyle and retail business in London. Mehta’s vision for the reborn company was rooted in both heritage and high-end commerce, with flagship stores—most notably one in the affluent Mayfair district at 97 New Bond Street—offering premium teas, confectionery, spices and other boutique goods. Despite the initial buzz and the cachet of its storied name, the modern East India Company struggled to sustain financial viability in an increasingly competitive retail environment. According to reports, the enterprise faced mounting debt and operational difficulties, culminating in the appointment of liquidators in October 2025 after liabilities piled up. The company reportedly owed significant sums to its parent group registered in the British Virgin Islands, unpaid taxes, and employee dues. Creditors’ voluntary liquidation proceedings were initiated as the business attempted to address its debts, but these efforts ultimately proved insufficient.
The liquidation process has rendered the company’s website inactive, and the once-bustling Mayfair store stands empty and available for lease, signaling the end of this latest chapter. Other related entities bearing the East India name linked to Mehta have also been dissolved or subjected to winding-up petitions from creditors. Industry analysts and commentators suggest that a third revival—after the two historical collapses the company has now endured—appears increasingly unlikely.
