The Honduras government has placed around 80% of the country under a drought alert as a powerful El Niño weather pattern brings extreme heat, depleted water reserves and severe damage to agriculture. The warning covers 234 of the country’s 298 municipalities, with authorities reporting falling reservoir levels, crop losses and livestock deaths that are increasingly threatening food security.
The situation is particularly severe in the Central American Dry Corridor, a drought-prone region extending across parts of Honduras, El Salvador and Nicaragua. The area is highly vulnerable to prolonged periods of heat and insufficient rainfall, and the current conditions have placed additional pressure on communities that depend heavily on agriculture and livestock for their livelihoods.
Honduran authorities have classified 75 areas, including the capital Tegucigalpa, under the highest level of drought alert. Tegucigalpa, which has a population of about 1.7 million, is among the areas facing serious concerns over water availability. Reservoirs supplying the capital have experienced substantial declines, with the La Concepcion reservoir near Tegucigalpa showing the visible effects of the prolonged dry conditions.
The drought is also having a devastating impact on farmers and livestock owners. In several affected areas, cattle have reportedly died because of a lack of water, while surviving animals are becoming increasingly weak. Francisco Euceda, a cattle rancher in one of the municipalities under the highest alert, described the circumstances as critical and said the outlook remained discouraging.
The government has warned that the effects of the crisis could continue well into next year. President Nasry Asfura said the drought could persist until March or April 2027 and announced emergency measures aimed at helping communities cope with the worsening conditions. These measures include drilling additional wells, building new reservoirs and providing food assistance to areas facing the most serious shortages.
El Niño is a recurring climate phenomenon associated with unusually warm surface waters in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean. It can disrupt normal atmospheric circulation and rainfall patterns across different parts of the world. The 2026 event is being closely watched because forecasts indicate that it could rank among the strongest El Niño episodes on record, raising concerns about further heat, drought and extreme weather in vulnerable regions.
The consequences are extending beyond Honduras. The United Nations World Food Programme has warned that Central America is expected to be among the regions most severely affected by hunger linked to El Niño. Honduras, El Salvador and Nicaragua have already recorded exceptionally high temperatures, with all three countries breaking monthly temperature records during June and July. The combination of extreme heat, reduced rainfall and agricultural losses has heightened fears of food shortages in communities that are already economically vulnerable.
The wider impact of the weather pattern is also being felt across Latin America. From Mexico to northern Brazil, including the Pacific coast and the Guiana Shield, around 110 million people experienced their hottest July on record, according to the report. Scientists and international agencies have warned that the current El Niño could amplify existing climate pressures and make it more difficult for vulnerable populations to cope with prolonged heat and water shortages.
The crisis has also prompted renewed concern about the ability of governments and communities to maintain adequate supplies of food and water during prolonged dry periods. For Honduras, the immediate priority is to protect drinking-water supplies, support farmers and livestock owners and prevent drought-related shortages from developing into a wider humanitarian crisis.
The Pan American Health Organization has separately reported that Honduras declared a state of emergency in 75 municipalities because of the worsening El Niño-associated drought.
With the government expecting difficult conditions to continue for several more months, authorities are now racing to expand water infrastructure and deliver assistance to the worst-affected communities. The scale of the alert, covering four out of every five municipalities, underlines the severity of the crisis and the growing pressure that extreme weather is placing on Honduras’s food, water and agricultural systems.
