In a busy hotel lobby on Hong Kong Island, a delivery robot pauses patiently outside a lift, waits for guests to exit, and then glides in to continue its journey. The seamless interaction may appear simple, but it reflects the growing sophistication of Chinese robotics and a larger strategic shift underway among mainland technology firms.
The robot, developed by mainland Chinese company Yunji Technology, is designed to operate in complex, real-world environments such as hotels, hospitals, and factories. Its presence in an international hotel chain in Hong Kongunderscores the city’s rising importance as a testing ground for Chinese tech companies seeking global expansion.
Yunji is among a growing number of mainland firms leveraging Hong Kong as a gateway to international markets. According to company executives, the strategy is to first establish credibility in Hong Kong before expanding overseas. The city offers access to global investors, international clients, and regulatory frameworks that align more closely with global standards than mainland China.
This shift comes amid increasing scrutiny of Chinese technology firms in Western markets. Concerns over data security, state influence, and market dominance—often referred to as “China risk”—have made it more difficult for these companies to access capital and build trust in the United States and Europe.
As a result, Hong Kong is becoming a preferred alternative. Data shows a sharp rise in mainland firms listing on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, with 76 companies going public last year compared to 30 the previous year. Investment promotion agency Invest Hong Kong has also reported increased activity from mainland firms setting up or expanding operations in the city, particularly in innovation and technology sectors.
Experts say geopolitical tensions have played a key role in this transition. Analysts note that mainland firms are increasingly choosing Hong Kong for primary share listings as ambitions to list in New York face growing regulatory and political hurdles. The city is positioning itself as a bridge between China and global markets, offering a platform where companies can demonstrate compliance with international norms.
The trend aligns with Beijing’s broader push for technological self-reliance under its latest economic roadmap. With a focus on reducing dependence on foreign hardware and software—especially in areas like artificial intelligence and semiconductors—Chinese firms are being encouraged to strengthen domestic capabilities while cautiously expanding abroad.
For companies like Yunji, Hong Kong provides an opportunity to showcase their technology in international settings. The firm listed in the city last October to diversify its investor base beyond mainland China. Similarly, MiningLamp Technology established operations in Hong Kong to test cross-border data compliance and refine processes before entering other markets.
However, success in Hong Kong does not guarantee smooth entry into Western economies. Governments in the US and Europe have tightened national security reviews of Chinese investments, particularly in sensitive sectors such as telecommunications and critical infrastructure. Some countries have also moved to restrict Chinese suppliers from their networks.
Concerns over corporate governance and transparency persist as well. The fallout from the Luckin Coffee accounting scandal continues to serve as a cautionary example for global investors, after the company admitted to fabricating sales and was subsequently delisted from Nasdaq.
At the same time, Hong Kong itself faces challenges in maintaining its global appeal. Since the 2019 pro-democracy protests, the imposition of sweeping national security laws has drawn criticism from Western governments and rights groups, who argue that political freedoms have been curtailed. Authorities, however, maintain that the measures were necessary to restore stability.
Analysts caution that while Hong Kong offers advantages, it is not a complete shield from geopolitical risks. Mainland firms operating from the city remain subject to regulatory oversight from Beijing, particularly in areas such as cybersecurity, data governance, and artificial intelligence.
Even so, Hong Kong’s strategic value continues to grow as Chinese tech companies navigate an increasingly complex global landscape—balancing ambitions for international expansion with rising political and regulatory barriers.
