In the high-altitude deserts of Ladakh, where farming has long depended on glacial meltwater, communities are increasingly turning to technology-driven solutions to overcome worsening water scarcity caused by climate change.
Nestled nearly 4,000 metres above sea level, the Himalayan village of Sakti faces some of the harshest agricultural conditions in the country. The region receives minimal rainfall and experiences a short growing season, leaving farmers with only a narrow window to cultivate crops such as wheat, peas and potatoes.
For decades, local agriculture relied on smaller glaciers located at lower elevations, which stored water during winter and gradually released it in spring when sowing began. However, rising global temperatures have caused many of these glaciers to disappear, creating serious challenges for farming communities.
Veteran farmer Gelak Gutme, 65, said the situation has deteriorated significantly over his lifetime. He recalled losing an entire crop last year due to a severe shortage of irrigation water. According to him, the disappearance of nearby glaciers has left farmers increasingly vulnerable, with many struggling to secure sufficient water at the beginning of the cultivation season.
Local water management committee member Lobzang Fardod explained that the smaller glaciers once acted as natural reservoirs, supplying meltwater precisely when it was needed for agriculture. Their disappearance has left barren rocky slopes in place of what were once reliable sources of water.
To address the growing crisis, several villages in Ladakh began experimenting more than a decade ago with artificial ice reservoirs, popularly known as ice stupas. The concept involved diverting water from higher elevations through pipelines during winter and spraying it into freezing air, allowing it to accumulate as large cone-shaped structures of ice. These ice formations would gradually melt in spring, providing water for irrigation.
While the ice stupas proved effective in supplying water, maintaining them posed significant challenges. Extreme winter temperatures, which frequently fall below minus 20 degrees Celsius and sometimes approach minus 30 degrees Celsius, often caused water inside pipelines to freeze. This led to cracked pipes and system failures. Farmers were required to camp in remote mountain locations throughout winter, regularly monitoring the infrastructure and clearing blockages using boiling water, often during the coldest hours of the night.
Officials say Ladakh has since emerged as a centre for innovative community-led water conservation projects. Seeking a more efficient alternative, local authorities partnered with technology firm Acres of Ice to develop an advanced system known as the Automated Ice Reservoir (AIR).
The upgraded system continues to channel water from higher elevations but employs automation and real-time environmental monitoring to improve efficiency and reliability. Water is released through a vertical nozzle, creating a fountain-like spray that freezes and accumulates as ice. The process is managed through a weather-resistant control unit powered by solar energy and battery backup.
Sensors linked to a weather station continuously monitor atmospheric conditions and water temperature inside the pipelines. If temperatures drop to levels that could threaten the infrastructure, the system automatically drains water from the pipes, preventing freezing and damage.
Unlike earlier ice stupas that sprayed water continuously, the AIR system operates in controlled bursts. Fine mist is sprayed onto existing ice layers and allowed to freeze before another cycle begins. Developers say this method reduces wastage and significantly improves ice formation efficiency.
As climate change continues to reshape the fragile Himalayan ecosystem, such innovations are providing hope that vulnerable mountain communities can adapt and secure vital water resources for future generations.
