President Isaac Herzog said on Wednesday that he will travel to Turkey, positioning the visit to a former security partner as part of an effort to forge a regional cooperation on climate change.
Israel’s President Isaac Herzog has been increasing diplomatic efforts to improve relations with Turkey, which has expressed dissatisfaction with Israel’s actions toward the Palestinians despite the fact that his position is primarily ceremonial.
Turkey’s support of Islamist extremist groups such as Hamas must come to an end, and Israel has sought to reassure Greece and Cyprus that its relations with those nations will not be jeopardised.
“I plan to visit our Mediterranean coast neighbours Greece, Cyprus, and Turkey in the coming month and talk with their leaders,” Herzog said at a climate conference.
As part of his efforts to form “a regional collaboration for addressing the climate problem,” he said he hoped to establish contacts with these three countries, as well as with Egypt, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, and the Palestinians.
The dates of Herzog’s travel to Turkey have been reported in the Turkish media as March 9-10. According to Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, discussions over energy cooperation will take place.
