During a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Saturday, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida promised a 5 trillion yen ($42 billion) investment in the country over the next five years, according to reports.
The two presidents were meeting to discuss how to bolster security in the face of the Ukraine issue as well as ways to improve economic connections between the two countries. In recent years, Japan has lent its support to India’s urban infrastructure development as well as the construction of a high-speed railway system based on its bullet train technology.
Then-Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe promised 3.5 trillion yen in investment and financing over five years in 2014, while on a visit to India with his counterpart Narendra Modi.
