Hawaii’s long-active volcano, Kīlauea, has once more burst to life with dramatic lava fountains observed at its summit — marking a fresh eruption in a cycle that began nearly a year ago. According to scientists at the US Geological Survey (USGS), multiple vents on the volcano’s summit opened early on December 6, sending molten lava skyward and prompting renewed scrutiny of volcanic hazards.
Webcams placed near the summit captured vivid footage of molten streams shooting upward within minutes of the eruption’s onset. That footage showed lava fountains rising rapidly from vents located inside the crater known as Halemaʻumaʻu, a pit crater in the volcano’s caldera that has been the focus of ongoing eruptive activity since late 2024.
The morning eruption — the 38th such episode since the current eruptive phase began on December 23, 2024 — started around 8:45 a.m. local time. Lava fountains initially measured about 50–100 feet (roughly 15–30 meters) in height, but observers noted that the plumes grew steadily more powerful within minutes. A camera (V3), mounted on the crater’s south rim to livestream the activity, was struck by volcanic debris — known as tephra — between 9:55 and 9:57 a.m. that same day, and was destroyed in the process.
Officials from USGS clarified that all eruptive activity remains confined to Halema‘uma‘u crater inside the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, and for now poses no threat to nearby towns or infrastructure. Consequently, local airports are not expected to be impacted by volcanic gas or ash.
Despite being smaller than some of its neighboring volcanoes, Kīlauea is among the most active volcanoes on Earth — a status underscored by the frequency and intensity of its eruptions over the past year. Authorities are closely monitoring the volcanic activity, especially given ongoing concerns about volcanic gas emissions and the potential for glassy volcanic fragments — known as “Pele’s hair” — to drift as far as 15 kilometers (about 10 miles) from the crater.
As the latest lava fountains subside, experts caution that the eruption cycle remains active. With the possibility of further episodes continuing into the coming weeks or months, both scientists and local authorities are maintaining heightened vigilance.
