Mercedes-Benz is nearly sold out of electric cars, owing to tight supply chains that make it difficult for the premium manufacturer to keep up with surging demand, according to its CEO.
“That’s mainly true for us as well,” Ola Kaellenius said at the FT Future of the Car 2022 conference, when asked about rivals’ claims including Volkswagen that demand for electric vehicles was outstripping supply.
Customers have been “so enthusiastic” about the company’s EQ family of electrified luxury vehicles, according to Kaellenius. “We’re doing everything we can to get the cars to the customers as quickly as we can,” he said.
Kaellenius also teased specifics of a fully-electrified platform for Mercedes-high-performance Benz’s AMG brand, which he claimed will be revealed at the company’s May 19 strategy update.
“We’re currently in full development on a completely specialized electric architecture for AMG, from the ground up,” he added, adding that the platform will be available “sometime around the end of 2025.”
