Mexico’s National Migration Institute (INM) reported on Monday that nearly 6,000 international migrants were detained in a four-day period.
According to the INM, the majority of the 5,688 migrants seized between April 21 and 24 were found in safe houses, trailers, or hidden in bus compartments or truck cabins.
Hondurans were by far the most apprehended nationality during the weekend, with 1,060 detained, followed by 942 Cubans and 906 Guatemalans.
According to the statement, migrants from 42 nations were taken into custody.
Others were discovered traveling through the desert or along highways in an attempt to reach the US-Mexico border.
From the beginning of the year through April 13, the most recent date available, Mexican immigration authorities apprehended 115,379 migrants, indicating a dramatic increase in irregular migration.
In President Joe Biden’s first year in office, a record number of migrants attempted to cross the US-Mexico land border, despite the Democrat’s efforts to address migration’s core causes, including dispatching envoys to Mexico and Panama.
Last month, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) told the media that current levels of violence in Mexico and Central America would continue to drive migration through 2022.
