The United States space agency Nasa has announced a significant adjustment to its Artemis programme, introducing an additional mission before attempting to land astronauts on the Moon for the first time in more than 50 years. The move is intended to reduce risks and allow astronauts to test crucial technology before undertaking the historic lunar landing scheduled later in the decade.
Under the earlier plan, Artemis II — currently targeted for launch in April — would carry astronauts on a journey around the Moon before returning to Earth. Following that mission, Artemis III was expected to attempt a crewed landing on the Moon in 2028. However, Nasa has now revised the timeline and mission sequence to include an extra step that will see astronauts remain closer to Earth before proceeding to the lunar surface.
According to the updated plan, Artemis III will now involve a crewed mission to low-Earth orbit in 2027. During this mission, astronauts will practice docking manoeuvres with a lunar lander spacecraft. Nasa officials say this step will provide an opportunity to test the integration of critical systems between the Orion crew capsule and the lunar landing vehicle before astronauts attempt to operate them near the Moon.
Nasa administrator Jared Isaacman said the decision to introduce the additional mission was driven by the need to avoid long gaps between launches and to strengthen mission readiness. He said that testing these technologies in low-Earth orbit would significantly reduce risks associated with future lunar landings.
Isaacman also noted that the additional mission would not delay the overall goal of returning humans to the Moon. The agency still aims to carry out one or possibly two lunar landings by 2028 under subsequent Artemis missions, including Artemis IV and Artemis V.
The space agency also provided an update on the upcoming Artemis II mission, which will involve four astronauts travelling around the far side of the Moon before returning to Earth. The launch had originally been planned for March, but the schedule was disrupted after engineers discovered a helium leak in the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket.
As a result, the rocket has been moved from the launch pad back to the Vehicle Assembly Building at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida for repairs and further technical inspection. Nasa officials say the earliest possible launch opportunity is now in April, though the final date will depend on how quickly engineers can resolve the technical issues.
Isaacman described the updated approach to the Artemis programme as a necessary shift in strategy. He said the earlier mission architecture — which involved long waiting periods between launches — was not ideal for maintaining progress toward the lunar landing objective. Testing the Orion capsule together with the lunar lander in low-Earth orbit, he said, would allow astronauts to verify system performance in a safer environment before attempting operations near the Moon.
The revised mission will also offer an opportunity to test astronaut spacesuits and other equipment before they are used on the lunar surface, further helping reduce risks associated with the complex mission.
Despite these developments, Nasa’s lunar programme still faces a critical challenge — selecting the spacecraft that will transport astronauts from lunar orbit to the Moon’s surface. SpaceX, the aerospace company founded by Elon Musk, has been contracted to develop a lunar lander that will be launched aboard its Starship rocket. However, delays in the development of the Starship system have raised concerns about meeting the planned timeline.
In response, Nasa has asked SpaceX to present a simplified plan that could accelerate the development and deployment of the lunar lander. At the same time, the agency has requested an alternative proposal from Blue Origin, the space company owned by Jeff Bezos, to speed up the development of a competing lunar landing system.
Isaacman said the planned docking exercise in low-Earth orbit during the Artemis III mission could involve one or both of the lander systems if they are ready.
The United States is under increasing pressure to return astronauts to the Moon as global competition in space intensifies. China has announced its ambition to land astronauts on the lunar surface by 2030 and has been steadily advancing its space exploration programme.
Both the United States and China are focusing their efforts on the Moon’s south pole, a region believed to contain water ice and other valuable resources. The area is considered strategically important for establishing future lunar bases, making the race to reach and secure key landing sites increasingly significant.
