Nepal’s political class is facing renewed scrutiny as the country prepares for national elections following months of unrest triggered by a youth-led uprising against corruption and perceived nepotism. What began as simmering resentment over the ostentatious social media displays of politicians’ children last year evolved into a nationwide movement that ultimately toppled a prime minister and forced political parties to promise reform.
The flashpoint came when images of lavish lifestyles circulated widely online. Designer gift boxes stacked like Christmas trees, extravagant weddings that shut down major roads, and luxury holidays in destinations such as Thailand and Switzerland became symbols of a widening divide between Nepal’s political elite and ordinary citizens. For many young Nepalis struggling with unemployment and economic hardship, the posts represented more than indulgence; they were evidence of entrenched privilege.
Nepal’s youth unemployment rate stands at 20.6%, and an estimated three million citizens work abroad, many in Gulf countries, to support families back home. Against this backdrop, resentment grew among Generation Z, who increasingly viewed the children of prominent leaders as beneficiaries of an unfair system. “The kids of big politicians celebrate special occasions in places like Thailand and Switzerland,” said Satish Kumar Yadav, a 25-year-old lab technician. “But the children of the general public are forced to go to Gulf countries to find jobs.”
Anger boiled over on 8 September when a proposed ban on social media platforms—where much of the criticism had been voiced—sparked mass protests. Within two days, 77 people were dead, many reportedly shot by police during clashes. The unrest led to the resignation of then-prime minister KP Oli, marking a dramatic turning point in Nepal’s political climate.
Several high-profile figures retreated from public view in the aftermath. Shrinkhala Khatiwada, a former Miss Nepal and daughter of a former health minister, shut down her Instagram account after previously defending herself against accusations of privilege. Smita Dahal, granddaughter of a three-time prime minister, made her social media private following criticism over posts showcasing luxury handbags. However, some figures, including entrepreneur Saugat Thapa, son of a former minister, continued sharing images of international travel and high-end fashion, though such posts appear to generate less outrage than before.
Activists say the movement’s focus has since shifted beyond individual displays of wealth to systemic corruption. According to Transparency International, 84% of Nepalis consider government corruption a major problem. Recent cases have reinforced these perceptions. In December, five former ministers were among 55 individuals charged in connection with allegedly inflating construction costs for a new airport by $74 million. Separate charges have also been filed against former cabinet ministers accused of involvement in a scheme that provided fake documentation to Nepalis seeking entry into the United States as Bhutanese refugees.
Political parties have responded with reform pledges. The Rastriya Swatantra Party has promised stronger accountability for constitutional bodies, while the Communist Party of Nepal UML has vowed to mobilize youth in national development. The Nepali Congress has proposed a high-level investigation into the assets of public office holders dating back to 1991 and introduced internal reforms, including leadership term limits.
For youth leaders such as Rakshya Bam, these measures are tentative but meaningful steps. Still, skepticism remains widespread. “If new faces come, I am hopeful there will be changes,” Yadav said. “But if old political parties still retain power, there may not be much change.”
Analysts caution that lasting reform will be difficult, particularly if a coalition government emerges. For many young voters, the memory of September’s violence remains fresh. Dipika Saru Mugar, who traveled 16 hours to cast her first vote, said the election represents an opportunity to honor those who died. “The revolt was the result of a pain,” she said. “Common people have been facing a lot of injustice and I want karma to be served.”
As Nepal heads to the polls, the anger that once flooded social media has transformed into political momentum, placing the country’s entrenched power structures under unprecedented pressure from its youngest generation.
