The opening race of Formula 1’s new technological era in Australia delivered thrilling on-track action but also left drivers and teams divided over whether the sport’s latest regulations have improved racing or made it overly artificial. Despite an entertaining contest that saw Mercedes driver George Russell secure victory, many competitors expressed unease about the direction the sport may be heading under the new engine regulations.
Ahead of the season opener in Melbourne, the Formula 1 paddock had been filled with uncertainty. The sport has introduced a new power unit concept that divides energy usage almost equally between traditional internal combustion engines and electrical power. While the change aims to promote sustainability and technological advancement, it has also forced drivers to adapt to unfamiliar driving strategies involving constant energy management.
There had been widespread apprehension about how the new system would impact racing. Teams worried about the possibility of major speed differences between cars depending on whether they were deploying electrical energy or recharging their batteries. Such variations, some feared, could create dangerous situations on track, particularly during race starts when cars accelerate at very different rates.
When the race finally got underway, however, the spectacle largely resembled traditional Formula 1 racing. Russell and Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc engaged in an intense duel for the lead during the opening laps, repeatedly overtaking each other using special energy deployment modes such as “boost” and “overtake.” Their battle proved to be one of the most exciting moments of the race and demonstrated the dramatic effect the new technology can have on wheel-to-wheel competition.
According to Formula 1’s official statistics, the race produced as many as 125 overtaking manoeuvres — a sharp increase compared with the 45 overtakes recorded at the same event last year. While this surge suggests more dynamic racing, some observers questioned whether overtaking triggered by electronic power boosts truly represents the essence of driver skill that traditionally defines the sport.
Russell admitted that the fight with Leclerc had been tense and unpredictable under the new conditions. Leclerc, who eventually finished third behind Russell and his Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli, acknowledged that the need to continuously deploy and recover nearly 350 kilowatts of electrical power would significantly change how drivers approach overtaking throughout the season.
Other drivers had mixed reactions. Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, who finished fourth behind Leclerc, said he enjoyed the challenge and described the race as fun to drive. However, reigning world champion Lando Norrisexpressed concerns about safety risks arising from large speed differentials between cars. He warned that the situation could potentially lead to a serious accident if a faster car collided with one travelling significantly slower.
Four-time champion Max Verstappen also voiced reservations, saying he still loves racing but hopes the sport can improve the current format. Meanwhile, Ferrari team principal Frédéric Vasseur remarked that the intense early battle for the lead was unlike anything he had seen in the past decade.
The new technology also had a strategic impact on the race. Because drivers consumed electrical energy while overtaking, they became vulnerable to immediate counterattacks from rivals with more power available. This back-and-forth exchange made it difficult for Russell and Leclerc to pull away from the pack, allowing Hamilton and Antonelli to close the gap and briefly create a four-way battle for the lead.
Eventually, a virtual safety car period and differing pit strategies helped Russell break free and secure a comfortable victory, giving Mercedes a one-two finish and strong momentum heading into the next race in China.
Despite the excitement, concerns remain about the safety implications of such fluctuating speeds. Several drivers reported experiencing dramatic speed differences during the race start, and there was a near collision involving Racing Bulls driver Liam Lawson and Alpine’s Franco Colapinto.
Team leaders also questioned whether overtaking enabled primarily by electronic energy deployment could make racing feel artificial. McLaren team principal Andrea Stella described the system as somewhat contrived and suggested that the rules may require further adjustments.
Formula 1 authorities and teams have already agreed to review the regulations after the first three races of the season. For now, the Australian Grand Prix has offered both promise and uncertainty, showcasing thrilling battles while raising important questions about how the sport’s new technological direction will shape its future.
