Nigeria’s fast-growing digital creator economy is drawing global attention, with thousands of young people producing comedy skits, live streams and online videos that attract millions of viewers. Yet despite the sector’s rapid expansion and growing cultural influence, many content creators say financial stability remains elusive.
On film sets across Lagos, the scale of production for online content increasingly resembles that of professional film shoots. Popular comedian and skit-maker Broda Shaggi is among the best-known faces in the industry. His skits, followed by millions on social media, require teams of camera operators, lighting assistants, makeup artists and editors. Industry managers say the effort behind viral content is often underestimated, as creators must produce new and engaging material almost daily to maintain their online relevance.
The rise of creators like Broda Shaggi illustrates the transformation of Nigeria’s online entertainment ecosystem. Many young Nigerians have turned to platforms such as YouTube, TikTok and Instagram to showcase comedy, commentary and lifestyle content. According to the 2026 Africa Creator Economy Report, the sector is valued at around $3.1 billion and could expand to nearly $17.8 billion by 2030, highlighting its potential as a major contributor to Africa’s digital economy.
However, the headline figures mask a difficult reality for most creators. Research cited in the report suggests that more than half of African digital creators earn less than $100 per month, despite building large audiences. Advertising revenue generated by online platforms in Africa remains significantly lower than in Europe or North America, which reduces payouts to creators. As a result, many influencers rely on brand partnerships, sponsorship deals or personal support from family and friends to sustain their work.
Industry experts say structural challenges continue to limit the earning potential of Nigerian creators. Limited access to funding, unreliable electricity supply and high internet costs make consistent production difficult. Some creators say they are forced to shoot indoors because filming outside can attract unwanted attention or disruptions. Others complain that there are few public investment schemes aimed specifically at supporting digital creators, unlike those available to filmmakers or other creative industries.
The rapid rise of live streaming and short-form content has also created new stars. Young streamers and influencers are gaining continental recognition through online platforms and interactive content formats. Yet even as audiences grow, the monetisation systems available to African creators remain limited, preventing many from converting online popularity into reliable income streams.
Government officials in Nigeria have expressed interest in developing the creative economy as part of broader efforts to diversify the country’s oil-dependent economy. While creators earning above certain thresholds are taxed as freelancers, many in the industry argue that policy support should come before taxation. At gatherings such as the African Creators Summit in Lagos, participants have called for incentives, improved regulations and infrastructure that would help creators reach global markets and attract international partnerships.
Another challenge facing the sector is the lack of unified representation. Multiple creator associations exist, but industry leaders say their fragmentation makes it difficult to advocate effectively for policy reforms. Analysts believe stronger collaboration between creators, government regulators and global technology companies will be necessary to address issues such as copyright protection, artificial-intelligence misuse and fair revenue sharing.
Despite these hurdles, optimism about Nigeria’s digital creative sector remains strong. With millions of young people turning to social media as both a career and creative outlet, experts say the country could become one of the world’s most influential hubs for online entertainment—provided the financial and structural barriers are addressed.
