A fragile ceasefire between the United States and Iran, brokered by Pakistan after weeks of escalating conflict involving Israel, briefly raised hopes of de-escalation in the Middle East, before high-stakes negotiations in Islamabad failed to produce a lasting agreement.
The ceasefire, announced earlier this week, marked a significant diplomatic breakthrough for Pakistan, which positioned itself as a key mediator between the warring sides. The truce, agreed after intense backchannel diplomacy involving global stakeholders including China, was described by Pakistani officials as one of the country’s most notable diplomatic successes in recent years. The agreement aimed to halt hostilities for two weeks and create space for broader peace negotiations.
The conflict, which began in late February following joint US-Israeli strikes on Iran, had rapidly spiralled into a regional crisis, triggering retaliatory Iranian actions, including disruption of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz — a critical global energy route. The war has led to thousands of deaths, widespread destruction, and severe economic consequences, including a global energy shock.
Pakistan’s role proved central in bringing both sides to the negotiating table. Its leadership, including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and military officials, engaged in intensive shuttle diplomacy while leveraging ties with both Washington and Tehran. China’s intervention also played a crucial role, offering assurances to Iran and acting as a guarantor for the ceasefire framework.
Despite the breakthrough, the ceasefire remained tenuous from the outset. Disagreements quickly emerged over its scope, particularly regarding whether it extended to ongoing hostilities involving Israel and Lebanon. While Iran and Pakistan indicated that the truce covered the wider region, the United States and Israel maintained that operations in Lebanon were separate.
To build on the ceasefire, direct talks between US and Iranian delegations were convened in Islamabad — the first such engagement in decades. The negotiations were seen as a critical opportunity to secure a longer-term settlement and stabilise the region. However, after nearly 21 hours of discussions, the talks collapsed without an agreement.
Key sticking points included Iran’s nuclear programme, control and security of the Strait of Hormuz, sanctions relief, and demands for war reparations. While Washington insisted on firm commitments from Tehran to curb its nuclear ambitions and ensure maritime access, Iran accused the US of making excessive demands and sought guarantees on sanctions and regional security.
The failure of the talks has cast uncertainty over the future of the ceasefire, with fears that hostilities could resume if diplomatic efforts do not regain momentum. Although both sides indicated that further negotiations may continue, the lack of immediate progress underscores the deep divisions that persist.
For now, the ceasefire holds, but with tensions still high and core issues unresolved, the path to a durable peace in the region remains uncertain.
