Pakistan has formally named its first lunar rover Jinnah-1, marking a significant step in the country’s efforts to expand its presence in space exploration. The rover is scheduled to travel to the Moon in 2029 as part of China’s Chang’e-8 mission and is expected to operate in the lunar south polar region, an area that has emerged as a major focus of international scientific and space programmes.
The announcement was made by Pakistan’s Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) at a ceremony in Islamabad. The name Jinnah-1 was chosen through a nationwide competition that attracted around 4,000 proposals. Seven participants independently suggested the same name, following which the final winner was selected through a draw. The honour went to 17-year-old Tayyab Karim from Bahawalnagar, who had submitted the name.
The name is a tribute to Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan. SUPARCO described the choice as reflecting the country’s aspirations for scientific advancement, technological development and the exploration of new frontiers in space. The designation “Jinnah-1” also signals Pakistan’s ambition to establish a continuing programme of lunar exploration rather than treating the mission as a one-off venture.
Jinnah-1 is expected to reach the Moon aboard China’s Chang’e-8 mission, with Pakistan participating in the broader Chinese lunar exploration programme. SUPARCO announced its collaboration with the Chang’e-8 mission in 2024, describing the partnership as an important development for Pakistan’s space programme. The planned mission will give Pakistani scientists and engineers an opportunity to participate in lunar surface operations and scientific investigations.
The rover will be deployed near the Moon’s south pole, a region that has attracted considerable interest because of its difficult terrain and the possibility of water ice being preserved inside permanently shadowed craters. The presence of water could have major implications for future lunar exploration, as it could potentially be processed into resources such as oxygen and hydrogen. The region is therefore viewed as strategically important for the development of future lunar infrastructure and longer-duration human missions.
Jinnah-1 will undertake scientific investigations of the lunar environment. According to SUPARCO, its objectives include studying the Moon’s surface geology, plasma and radiation environment and conducting experiments linked to future lunar research and the possibility of human activity on the Moon. The mission is expected to provide Pakistan with valuable experience in planetary science, robotics and operating scientific equipment beyond Earth.
Pakistan’s lunar ambitions have already included participation in China’s Chang’e-6 mission. In 2024, the country’s ICUBE-Q lunar nanosatellite travelled aboard the Chinese spacecraft and entered lunar orbit, giving Pakistan an early opportunity to participate in a deep-space mission. The Jinnah-1 project, however, represents a more substantial step because it involves a locally developed rover intended to operate directly on the lunar surface.
The planned mission also comes amid growing international competition and cooperation around lunar exploration. India successfully landed Chandrayaan-3 near the Moon’s south polar region in 2023, becoming the first country to achieve a landing in the area. China is pursuing a series of missions aimed at studying the south pole and developing technologies relevant to future lunar infrastructure, while the United States is also targeting the region through its Artemis programme.
For Pakistan, participation in Chang’e-8 provides access to an established Chinese lunar mission while allowing the country to develop and demonstrate its own space technology. The 2029 mission is consequently being viewed as an important milestone for SUPARCO and Pakistan’s broader scientific ambitions, potentially laying the groundwork for greater participation in future lunar and deep-space exploration programmes.
