A fierce escalation along the Thailand–Cambodia frontier has erupted after armed clashes centered on the 11th‑century Khmer temple of Prasat Ta Muen Thom, which houses a natural Shiva lingam and has become the epicenter of a deadly dispute over territorial sovereignty.
Located on the remote Dangrek Mountains border between Thailand’s Surin province and Cambodia’s Oddar Meanchey province, Prasat Ta Muen Thom is an ancient Hindu sanctuary built during the Khmer Empire in the 11th century. With a naturally occurring Shiva lingam in its sanctum, the temple holds tremendous cultural and religious significance to both nations. Thailand officially registered the site as a national historical monument in 1935, asserting it lies within Surin, while Cambodia maintains it should be part of Odar Meanchey and under its administration.
Tensions reached a breaking point earlier this week following a landmine incident that injured several Thai soldiers—a mine Thailand blamed on Cambodia. Thai forces launched retaliatory airstrikes using F‑16 jets, while Cambodia denied planting new mines, calling the lands the remnants of past conflicts. Both sides accuse each other of initiating the violence. These provocations led to intense fighting around Ta Muen Thom and nearby Preah Vihear, another Hindu temple long disputed by both nations.
According to multiple sources, the confrontations began on July 24, 2025, when Cambodian troops allegedly approached Thai positions near Ta Muen Thom. Thai forces responded with artillery after being fired upon. Cambodia labeled this a Thai incursion, while Thailand accused Cambodian rockets of targeting Thai civilian zones including a hospital, labeling such strikes unlawful and prompting the closure of border checkpoints and a Thai military retaliation. The violence rapidly spread across six border locations. Thailand reported 12 fatalities—11 civilians and one soldier—and at least 31 wounded. Cambodia cited similar casualties and displacement, declaring the assault unprovoked.
Civilians have borne the brunt of the conflict, with more than 100,000 people displaced across both nations. Emergency evacuations are underway within a 50‑kilometer radius of contested areas. Thailand has shut down all border crossings in Surin province, while both countries have recalled ambassadors and expelled one another’s diplomatic staff.
International response has grown urgent: Cambodia has formally appealed to the U.N. Security Council to intervene, decrying what it calls Thai aggression.
