Putin to handover power temporarily; to undergo cancer treatment

Russian President Vladimir Putin may have cancer surgery while temporarily turning over control to the country’s Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev.

According to the New York Post, Putin has been advised by physicians that he needs surgery, citing a media channel apparently maintained by a retired Russian Foreign Intelligence Service lieutenant general.

Putin is likely to be incapacitated for “a short period” as a result of the operation and rehabilitation, according to the article.

Putin’s allegedly “sickly look and uncommonly fidgety behavior in public” in recent months, according to the source, has led to speculation that he is suffering from cancer and a slew of other terrible illnesses, including Parkinson’s disease.

According to the New York Post, a US official indicated on Monday that the media allegations could not be validated, with Pentagon spokesperson John Kirby adding, “I have seen nothing that might assist us corroborate that.”

Putin allegedly held a two-hour “heart-to-heart” talk with Nikolai Patrushev a few days ago, according to the story, which cited a media article.

“We know Putin told Patrushev that he considered him to be his single trusted buddy and friend in the administration,” the article stated. “In addition, the president guaranteed that if his health deteriorates, actual leadership of the country will be temporarily transferred to Patrushev.”

According to the New York Post, Russia’s Security Council, of which Patruchev is secretary, is an influential body that reports directly to Putin and provides guidance on military and security issues within Russia. Most of the council’s power is vested in Patrushev, who is widely regarded as a staunch Putin ally.

Patrushev, like Putin, has spent his whole career in Russian intelligence, first with the Soviet KGB and subsequently with the Russian FSB, according to the media.

Patrushev accused America and Europe of supporting neo-Nazi ideas in Ukraine and trying to drag the conflict out “until the last Ukrainian” in a rare interview with the state-run Russian newspaper Rossiyskaya Gazeta last week, according to the article.

“Using their henchmen in Kyiv, the Americans tried to establish an antipode of our nation in order to restrict Russia,” he allegedly claimed. “They cynically chose Ukraine for this, aiming to separate essentially a single people.”

The Russian President’s health has been under scrutiny in recent weeks, particularly when he was photographed clutching a desk during a meeting with Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu last month.
