Austria has been rocked by a major food safety scare after authorities confirmed the presence of rat poison in a jar of baby food, prompting an urgent nationwide recall and a widening criminal investigation. The alarming discovery was made after a customer reported a suspicious jar of carrot-and-potato baby food manufactured by HiPP, which later tested positive for toxic substances, according to police in the Burgenland region.
The contaminated product was part of a batch distributed through SPAR supermarket outlets, one of the country’s largest retail chains. In response, the company initiated a precautionary recall across more than 1,000 stores, with officials later confirming that as many as 1,500 outlets were affected. Authorities and the manufacturer have stressed that the move was taken as a safety measure, even as investigations continue into the source of contamination.
Police said laboratory analysis confirmed the presence of rat poison in a 190-gram jar of the baby food. The product in question, intended for infants, has raised serious concerns due to the potentially fatal consequences of ingestion. The manufacturer warned that consuming the contaminated food could be life-threatening, especially for babies.
Early findings suggest the contamination may not have occurred during production but could be the result of deliberate tampering. The company indicated that “external criminal interference” cannot be ruled out, pointing towards a possible sabotage of the distribution chain. Reports have also indicated that authorities are probing the possibility of an extortion attempt linked to the incident.
Officials have urged consumers to remain vigilant and avoid consuming any suspicious jars. The affected products can reportedly be identified by visible signs such as damaged lids, missing safety seals, unusual smells, or a sticker marked with a red circle on the base. Customers have been advised to return the products to stores for a full refund, while also taking precautions such as washing hands thoroughly after handling the jars.
The investigation has taken on an international dimension, with authorities in Germany, Slovakia and the Czech Republic also examining similar cases. Initial tests on jars seized outside Austria have reportedly detected toxic substances, suggesting the issue may extend beyond a single location. Austrian officials said they were alerted to the risk following developments in Germany, further intensifying concerns about cross-border contamination or coordinated interference.
Health experts have warned that common rat poisons can interfere with blood clotting, potentially leading to serious symptoms such as bleeding, bruising, and internal complications if ingested. Parents have been urged to seek immediate medical attention if any such symptoms appear in children who may have consumed the product.
While no injuries or illnesses have been reported so far, authorities have described the situation as extremely serious due to the vulnerability of the target group.
