After Boris Johnson stated the day before that he would step down as prime minister, Rishi Sunak, a former British finance minister, declared on Friday that he was running to succeed Johnson.
“Someone needs to seize this opportunity and choose wisely. I’m running to be the next Conservative Party leader and your prime minister because of this “In a campaign video posted on Twitter, Sunak said.
Sunak abruptly left his position as finance minister on Tuesday, one of two resignations that started a series of events that resulted in Johnson’s resignation.
A party committee is expected to announce the guidelines and schedule for the election to replace Johnson the following week.
As the two tried to reach a consensus on the country’s future moves, Sunak said in his resignation letter that it had become evident that his approach to the economy had been too different from Johnson’s.
In his video announcing his candidacy, he carried on same subject.
The choices we make now will determine whether or not the British people of tomorrow will likewise have the opportunity for a better future, he said.
“Do we approach this moment honestly, gravely, and resolutely? Or do we recite to ourselves soothing fairy tales that may make us feel better right now but may harm our kids in the long run?”
