Russia’s military advance in Ukraine has slowed to a near standstill, with new analysis indicating that Moscow’s forces made almost no territorial gains in March 2026 — the first such slowdown since 2023 — even as the war grinds on with continued intensity across multiple fronts.
Data cited from battlefield assessments, including those by the Institute for the Study of War, suggest that Russian forces failed to secure meaningful ground last month, marking a sharp contrast to 2025, when Moscow had recorded its most significant territorial expansion since the early phase of the invasion.
The slowdown highlights a shifting dynamic in the conflict, now in its fifth year, where both sides are increasingly locked in attritional warfare. Ukrainian forces, while not achieving sweeping breakthroughs, have managed to stabilise key frontlines and even reclaim small pockets of territory. In March alone, Kyiv’s troops regained limited areas, particularly in the southeastern theatre, further underscoring Russia’s stalled momentum.
Military analysts point to a combination of factors behind Russia’s faltering advance, including logistical challenges, sustained Ukrainian resistance, and evolving battlefield tactics. Over the past year, Ukraine has increasingly relied on drone warfare and precision strikes to disrupt Russian supply lines and slow offensive operations. These tactics have made it harder for Russian troops to consolidate gains or mount large-scale advances.
Despite the slowdown, the conflict remains highly active and deadly. Russian forces have continued to carry out widespread drone and missile attacks targeting Ukrainian cities and infrastructure. Analysts note that even during periods of relative progress, Russian gains have remained limited when measured against Ukraine’s overall size. The current stagnation reinforces assessments that the conflict has entered a prolonged phase of incremental advances and counterattacks rather than decisive breakthroughs.
Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts to resolve the war remain stalled, with major differences between Kyiv and Moscow continuing to hinder negotiations. International attention has also been partially diverted by other global crises, complicating coordinated diplomatic pressure.
