Samsung Electronics has reported an extraordinary jump in quarterly profits, driven by surging demand for artificial intelligence (AI) memory chips, but the record financial performance failed to reassure investors as concerns over the sustainability of the AI boom triggered a sharp decline in technology stocks across global markets.
The South Korean technology giant projected an operating profit of around 89.4 trillion won (approximately $58 billion) for the April-June quarter, marking an increase of more than 1,800 per cent compared to the same period last year. The remarkable earnings growth was largely fuelled by soaring demand for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips and advanced semiconductor products that power AI servers and data centres. Revenue also more than doubled year-on-year, highlighting the company’s strong position in the rapidly expanding AI hardware market.
Despite the impressive earnings announcement, Samsung’s shares dropped nearly 10 per cent, reflecting growing anxiety among investors about the future of AI-related investments. The decline mirrored a broader sell-off across semiconductor companies, with several major chipmakers witnessing significant losses as markets questioned whether the current pace of AI infrastructure spending can be sustained over the long term.
Analysts said investors are becoming increasingly cautious after months of strong gains in AI-linked stocks. While demand for AI chips remains robust, markets are beginning to worry that technology companies may have invested too aggressively in expanding computing capacity. Concerns over possible oversupply, slowing capital expenditure by major cloud service providers and uncertainty surrounding future AI adoption have prompted many investors to book profits despite the sector’s strong earnings.
The weakness was not limited to Samsung alone. Shares of several global semiconductor firms, including memory chip manufacturers and AI hardware companies, also came under pressure. The sell-off extended beyond Asia into the United States, where technology-heavy indices declined as investors reassessed valuations of companies that have benefited from the AI boom over the past year. Major AI-related firms such as AMD, Intel and Micron also witnessed declines, dragging broader market indices lower.
Market experts believe the latest correction does not necessarily indicate weakening demand for AI technology but rather reflects elevated expectations that have become increasingly difficult for companies to exceed. After several quarters of exceptional growth, investors are now looking for stronger guidance on future earnings and evidence that AI-driven investments will continue generating sustainable returns.
Some analysts also pointed to the cyclical nature of the semiconductor industry, where periods of rapid expansion are often followed by phases of oversupply and declining prices. While AI has created a new growth engine for chipmakers, investors remain cautious about whether current demand levels can absorb the massive production capacity being added worldwide.
Samsung, however, continues to benefit from its leadership in memory semiconductor manufacturing and remains one of the biggest suppliers of chips used in AI applications. Industry observers expect demand for advanced memory products to remain strong as technology companies continue expanding AI infrastructure, although market volatility may persist in the near term as investors closely monitor spending trends among leading AI developers.
