Seoul has ramped up security and raised its terror alert level ahead of the highly anticipated comeback concert by global K-pop sensation BTS, as authorities brace for one of the largest public gatherings in recent years. The move comes in response to potential security threats linked to global tensions, with officials prioritising safety as hundreds of thousands of fans are expected to converge in the South Korean capital.
The concert, scheduled at Gwanghwamun Square, marks BTS’s first full-group performance after completing mandatory military service and coincides with the release of their new album Arirang. The event is expected to draw an estimated 260,000 people in and around the venue, making it one of the biggest cultural gatherings in Seoul since the 2002 FIFA World Cup.
In light of the massive turnout and prevailing geopolitical uncertainties, authorities have elevated the terror alert level in central districts of the city from “attention” to “caution,” the second-lowest tier in a four-level system. Officials said the decision was taken as a precautionary measure, acknowledging that large-scale events can be potential targets and that it is difficult to completely rule out risks.
Security arrangements for the concert are extensive. More than 6,500 police personnel, along with special forces and riot units, have been deployed to manage the crowds and respond to emergencies. Thousands of additional city officials and safety staff will also be stationed at the venue. Authorities have imposed strict access controls, including limiting entry points, installing metal detectors, and restricting access to nearby rooftops. Subway services and road traffic in surrounding areas are expected to face disruptions, with some stations being bypassed to prevent overcrowding.
The heightened alert also reflects lingering concerns following past crowd-related tragedies in South Korea, particularly the 2022 Itaewon disaster, which prompted stricter safety protocols for mass gatherings. Officials have emphasised a “safety-first” approach, with coordinated emergency response systems and real-time monitoring in place throughout the event.
Adding to the sensitivity of the location, the concert venue lies close to key landmarks, including the US embassy, which authorities consider a potential risk point. This has further necessitated tighter surveillance and coordination among security agencies.
Despite the heavy security presence, the atmosphere in Seoul remains festive, with the city hosting a range of BTS-themed cultural events, including light displays and celebrations leading up to the concert. The performance will also be livestreamed globally, amplifying its international significance and marking the beginning of BTS’s extensive world tour.
