Switzerland’s glaciers are on course to suffer one of their fastest seasonal losses on record as an intense heatwave sweeping across Europe rapidly melts the snow and ice accumulated during the past winter. Scientists monitoring the country’s glaciers have warned that by Monday, virtually all of the seasonal snow that built up over the winter is expected to have disappeared, pushing the glaciers into a period of net ice loss much earlier than usual.
The milestone, known as “glacier loss day”, marks the point at which glaciers have exhausted the snow and ice gained during winter. From then until the arrival of colder weather in autumn, glaciers continue to shrink as melting outpaces accumulation. According to glacier experts, this year’s glacier loss day is expected to be the second earliest recorded since systematic observations began in 2000. Only 2022 witnessed an earlier occurrence, highlighting the growing impact of rising temperatures on the Alpine environment.
Researchers from Switzerland’s glacier monitoring network said the exceptional melt is being driven by a combination of repeated heatwaves and another winter marked by below-average snowfall. The ongoing spell of extreme temperatures follows an earlier heatwave in May, leaving glaciers exposed to prolonged periods of warmth. Scientists reported unusually high rates of snow and ice melt across the Alps, with weather stations in Switzerland registering record-breaking temperatures during the current heatwave.
Experts noted that glacier loss day normally falls much later in the summer, often in August, making this year’s early arrival particularly alarming. They stressed that while heatwaves are immediate triggers, the long-term retreat of glaciers is closely linked to climate change, which has increased average temperatures and reduced the amount of snowfall needed to replenish glacier mass each winter.
The shrinking glaciers are part of a broader climate crisis unfolding across Europe, where countries have been grappling with record-breaking temperatures, drought conditions and widespread heat-related disruptions. Scientists warn that the continued loss of Alpine glaciers threatens freshwater supplies, hydropower generation, ecosystems and tourism, while also increasing the risk of natural hazards such as landslides and unstable mountain slopes.
Glaciologists say the current conditions underscore the vulnerability of Europe’s glaciers to increasingly frequent and intense heatwaves. They caution that unless global greenhouse gas emissions are significantly reduced, glacier retreat is expected to continue, permanently reshaping Alpine landscapes and affecting communities that depend on them for water resources and economic activity.
