In a groundbreaking achievement for sustainable maritime transport, Australian shipbuilder Incat Tasmania has launched the world’s largest fully electric ferry, Hull 096, from its Hobart shipyard. Commissioned by South American ferry operator Buquebus, the 130-meter-long vessel is set to revolutionize short-sea shipping between Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Montevideo, Uruguay.
Hull 096 is powered entirely by battery-electric energy, boasting over 250 tonnes of batteries with a capacity exceeding 40 megawatt-hours—four times larger than any previous maritime installation, the shipbuilder said. This energy storage system feeds eight electric-driven water jets, doubling the number typically found on Incat ferries, ensuring optimal performance and efficiency .
The vessel’s battery system comprises more than 5,000 modules, collectively weighing approximately 280 tonnes. These modules are stacked in four dedicated rooms, from floor to ceiling, showcasing a novel mechanical configuration aimed at reducing weight and enhancing efficiency .
Designed to accommodate up to 2,100 passengers and 225 vehicles, Hull 096 also features a 2,300-square-meter retail deck—the largest shopping space on any ferry worldwide. This expansive area offers passengers a range of shopping, dining, and entertainment options, elevating the travel experience .
The launch of Hull 096 represents a significant step toward reducing the maritime industry’s carbon footprint, which currently accounts for approximately 3% of global emissions. The vessel is projected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 37,545 tonnes annually, equivalent to the emissions of about 8,750 petrol-powered passenger vehicles .
Incat Chairman Robert Clifford emphasized the vessel’s significance, stating, “Hull 096 is more than just a vessel—it’s a turning point for the maritime industry.” CEO Stephen Casey added, “This project demonstrates that large-scale, low-emission transport solutions are not only possible—they are ready now.”
Despite the vessel’s advancements, challenges remain in electric maritime transport, particularly concerning charging infrastructure. Currently, Hull 096 will rely on charging ports located on each side of the River Plate. The ferry can recharge in as little as 40 minutes, depending on electricity availability .
To address the limitations of current infrastructure, Incat is also developing a smaller diesel-electric hybrid ferry. This vessel is designed for future retrofitting to full electric propulsion, anticipating advancements in charging infrastructure and battery technology .
The $250 million project received a $60 million low-interest loan from the Tasmanian Development Board, highlighting the government’s commitment to sustainable industry initiatives. The launch ceremony was attended by political and business leaders, underscoring the ship’s global and local significance .
Incat’s expansion plans include building multiple electric ferries annually, with the potential to create thousands of jobs. However, the company emphasizes the need for continued government support to realize these ambitions fully .
Following its launch by shipbuilder, Hull 096 will undergo interior fit-out and sea trials in Hobart’s River Derwent later this year. Once operational, the vessel—named “China Zorrilla” in honor of the renowned Uruguayan actress—will commence service across the River Plate, setting a new standard for sustainable maritime transport.
