The administration of Donald Trump is moving toward a high-stakes intervention to keep struggling low-cost carrier Spirit Airlines afloat, with a proposed rescue package of up to $500 million taking shape as the airline teeters on the brink of collapse.
According to reports, the plan under discussion centres on a government-backed loan designed to help the airline continue operations during bankruptcy proceedings. The funding would initially act as emergency liquidity support but could later be converted into a longer-term financial arrangement once the airline exits bankruptcy. Crucially, the deal may also include warrants that would allow the US government to acquire a significant ownership stake—potentially as high as 90%—in the restructured company.
The proposal comes at a time when Spirit Airlines is grappling with severe financial distress. The carrier, known for its ultra-low-cost model, has already filed for bankruptcy twice since 2024 and has struggled to return to profitability in a highly competitive aviation market. For the Trump administration, the rescue effort is not just about saving a company but also about protecting jobs and maintaining competition in the aviation sector. Spirit Airlines employs thousands of workers, and its collapse could lead to widespread layoffs while also reducing capacity in the US domestic travel market.
