The National Guard announced on Saturday that security forces in Tunisia have demolished around 150 militant cells in the last six months.
He went on to say that some of the foreign militants detained were preparing to join “Jond Kilafha,” a group affiliated with the Islamic State that operates in Libya and the highlands along the Tunisian-Algerian border.
A cell that was preparing to stab the interior minister in the south of the country was dissolved, according to Houssem Eddine Jbebli, the country’s interior minister. “Attempts to carry out attacks against adjacent countries were stopped,” he said.
A number of presidential guards were slain in an attack on the country’s capital in 2015, prompting the government to declare a state of emergency in the country.
Recent years have seen the majority of militant plots thwarted, and Tunisian security forces have improved their efficiency in reacting to those assaults that do take place.
