During a ceremony at the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) in Abu Dhabi, the UAE Research Program for Rain Enhancement Science unveiled its AI-driven advancements in cloud seeding. This initiative positions the UAE as a global leader in combining AI and environmental technology.
AI is expected to significantly improve the precision and efficiency of cloud-seeding operations, which involve dispersing substances like salt or silver iodide into clouds to induce rain. This optimization could revolutionize weather modification, offering a sustainable alternative to energy-intensive desalination processes, which currently provide much of the UAE’s potable water.
Dr. Abdulla Al Mandous, president of the World Meteorological Organization and director general of the NCM, emphasized the importance of innovation in addressing global water security. “Traditional methods are no longer sufficient. We must adopt data-driven, AI-supported technologies to secure water resources sustainably,” he said.
Omar Al Yazeedi, NCM’s deputy director general, elaborated on AI’s potential role. “Clouds have a short lifespan, and AI can assist forecasters in identifying optimal seeding locations by analyzing key parameters. This transition from manual to AI-guided operations will increase efficiency and accuracy.”
The UAE’s efforts align with its goal to reduce reliance on desalination, which, while effective, is costly and energy-intensive. By integrating AI into weather manipulation, the UAE aims to create a model for addressing environmental challenges through advanced technology.
In conjunction with these advancements, the UAE will host the International Rain Augmentation Forum, a global platform dedicated to exploring innovative solutions to water scarcity. The event will focus on leveraging AI and the latest developments in rain enhancement science to shape future strategies for water security.
