British police said that their investigation into the COVID-19 lockdown parties conducted in Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s Downing Street office was complete, with 126 penalties issued.
Last month, Johnson and Finance Minister Rishi Sunak were both penalized for a meeting in Johnson’s office to commemorate his 56th birthday in June 2020, when social mingling was practically prohibited.
Opposition lawmakers and several members of his own party called on him to resign as a result.
“Given the volume of material that needed to be assessed and the necessity of ensuring that we had sufficient evidence for each FPN (fixed penalty notice) referral, our inquiry was comprehensive and impartial,” London Police Acting Deputy Commissioner Helen Ball said.
“We’ve finished our inquiry.”
The fines were for events hosted at Downing Street and other government buildings between May 2020 and April 2021, when lockdown precautions were in place to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, according to police.
There were 53 males and 73 women among those penalized, with several getting multiple fines.
