A severe heatwave sweeping across large parts of the United States and southern Canada is expected to disrupt Fourth of July celebrations marking America’s 250th Independence anniversary while also posing serious challenges for the ongoing FIFA World Cup, with scientists warning that such extreme temperatures have become far more likely because of human-induced climate change.
Meteorologists said a powerful “heat dome” has settled over much of the central and eastern United States, trapping hot air near the surface and pushing temperatures and humidity to dangerous levels. The weather system is forecast to affect millions of residents and visitors during one of the country’s busiest holiday weekends, as Washington DC prepares to host large-scale celebrations commemorating the nation’s 250th year of independence.
The intense heat is also expected to affect several FIFA World Cup fixtures scheduled in cities including Philadelphia and Miami. High humidity combined with soaring temperatures has raised concerns over the health and safety of players, spectators and event staff. Experts have advised organisers and attendees to remain hydrated, seek shade whenever possible and minimise prolonged exposure to the sun.
According to researchers from the World Weather Attribution group, the ongoing heatwave would have been “virtually impossible” without climate change caused by human activities. Scientists said global temperatures have already risen by about 1.4 degrees Celsius since the pre-industrial era due to greenhouse gas emissions, making rare extreme heat events significantly more frequent and intense than they were in the past.
Researchers noted that weather patterns which were once expected to occur only once every two centuries are now becoming increasingly common because of continued global warming. They stressed that heatwaves are no longer isolated weather events but are emerging as a recurring threat affecting everyday life, public health and major international events.
Authorities in several cities have introduced measures to protect the public from the extreme conditions. Cooling centres have been opened, additional medical teams have been deployed and officials have urged residents, particularly older adults, children and people with existing health conditions, to avoid strenuous outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours. Emergency planners have also increased preparations for large gatherings expected during the Independence Day celebrations.
The heatwave comes only days after concerns were raised over player welfare during the World Cup group stage, where several matches were played under potentially hazardous heat and humidity. Climate experts and players’ representatives have argued that future sporting calendars and venue selections will increasingly need to account for rising global temperatures.
Scientists said the latest weather event serves as another reminder of the growing impact of climate change across the world. They emphasised that reducing greenhouse gas emissions remains essential to limiting future warming and preventing even more severe heatwaves.
