“The 4th U.S. – Uruguay Bilateral Working Group was held on March 30, 2023. It was co-chaired by Mr Daniel Erikson, the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Western Hemisphere Affairs, and Dr Javier Garcia, the Minister of Defense for Uruguay. The Pentagon served as the venue for the meeting “, Department of Defense Spokesman Lt. Col. Devin T. Robinson stated.
U.S. – Uruguay Bilateral Working Group is a forum for senior leaders from the U.S. Department of Defense and Uruguay’s Ministry of Defense to discuss strategic-level defence issues and identify priorities for future cooperation. The conference was established in 2011. Senior leaders from both governments participate.
Dr Colin Kahl, US Under Secretary for Policy, attended the meeting to mark the occasion of the re-launch of this forum for the first time since 2015. He offered some special remarks and emphasized the importance of the defence relationship between the United States and Uruguay.
During the discussion, DASD Erikson and Minister Garcia covered various topics, including regional security, peacekeeping, Women, Peace, and Security, plans for defence modernization, strategy, and support to civil authorities.
