This year, Australia will stage the largest-ever Exercise Talisman Sabre in northern Australia, with over 30,000 military troops expected to take part—nearly twice as many as in 2021.
Talisman Sabre, which is currently in its tenth iteration, is the largest bilateral joint training exercise between the Australian Defence Force and the US military, demonstrating the closeness of our Alliance.
The twice-a-year exercise offers a chance to test advanced multi-domain warfare capabilities, establish and reaffirm military-to-military connections and interoperability, and fortify strategic alliances.
Fiji, Indonesia, Japan, the Republic of Korea, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Tonga, France, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Germany are confirmed partner countries participating in Talisman Sabre 2023.
Thailand, Singapore, and the Philippines are participating as observers.
The central locations for Talisman Sabre 2023 are Queensland, Western Australia, the Northern Territory, and New South Wales. It will also take place from July 22 to August 4 overall.
Deputy Prime Minister, the Hon. Richard Marles MP, stated, “Talisman Sabre is a practical demonstration of our enduring Alliance with the United States through deepening cooperation in training and innovation.”
Australia is thrilled to host the most oversized Talisman Sabre edition this year, with more of our partner countries than ever.
The Talisman Sabre “reflects a shared commitment to enduring relationships between trusted partners and a stable Indo-Pacific through an upholding of the rules-based order,” according to the statement.
Brigadier Damian Hill, the exercise’s director, stated that Talisman Sabre 2023 will be the most extensive iteration ever in terms of geographic scope and partner nation participation.
A safe and beneficial activity has been planned carefully for all participants.
“This year’s exercise will demonstrate our capability to receive large volumes of personnel and equipment into Australia from across the Indo-Pacific and stage, integrate, and move them forward into the large exercise area.”
“Talisman Sabre 2023 will take place across a variety of Defense and non-Defense training areas throughout northern Australia, and I thank the traditional owners, landowners, state authorities, and key community stakeholders who have helped us develop a safe and beneficial exercise for all participating nations,” the statement reads.
