In a significant development for Indian mountaineering, 75 Indian climbers, including 12 women, have received official clearance to ascend Mount Everest during the current spring season. This approval is part of the Nepal government’s broader initiative, which has authorized 441 climbers from 55 countries to undertake the challenging expedition to the world’s highest peak, standing at 8,848.86 meters.
The Nepal Department of Tourism has reported that, as of early May, permissions have been granted to 44 expeditions, accumulating a total royalty of NPR 653.8 million (approximately ₹40 crore). This figure contributes to the overall revenue of NPR 748.1 million collected from 1,095 climbers aiming to summit 26 different peaks across Nepal this season.
Preparations are in full swing, with hundreds of climbers already stationed at Everest Base Camp, acclimatizing and awaiting favorable weather conditions. The rope-fixing process, crucial for ensuring climbers’ safety, is nearing completion. Nepal’s 8K Expedition has deployed 12 Sherpa guides to finalize the route, with expectations to finish the task up to the summit by May 9 or 10.
This season’s Indian contingent includes notable figures such as Reena Bhatti from Haryana, known for summiting both Mount Everest and Mount Lhotse within 20.5 hours in May 2024, and Dr. Usha Hegde from Mysuru, who became the first civilian woman from Karnataka to scale Everest in 2024.
