According to figures released on Thursday by the National Statistics Institute, more than twice as many visitors as in the same month last year travelled to Spain in July. This number was only marginally below than pre-pandemic levels.
Nearly 12 billion euros ($12 billion) were spent by the 9.1 million visitors in July, more than twice as much as in 2021. The gross domestic product of Spain includes considerable amounts of tourism-related revenue.
Spain saw a record amount of foreign visitors in 2019, with 9.9 million arriving in July, before COVID-19 banned international travel in 2020.
According to Fernando Valdes, secretary of state for tourism, the only group that hasn’t visited the nation in the same numbers is Asian tourists.
“We’re probably missing (Asian tourists) to hit 100% of the 2019 figures,” he said.
He said that additional visitors from other nations had made up for the lack of Russian tourists since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
During the summer months of this year, Spain’s government anticipates that tourist arrivals will exceed 90% of pre-pandemic levels as northern Europeans dismiss their worries about inflation and make more travel plans than they did in 2019.
