The Labor government is investing as many as $16.4 million in setting up nation’s first Endo and Pelvic Pain clinics across Australia, the Katy Gallagher, the minister for finance, women and public service of Australia, said.
In an effort support the management of endometriosis, pelvic pain and women’s reproductive health in Australia, the Albanese Government will be funding 16 such clinics across the country, with at least one in every state and territory.
While sharing the announcement on her official Twitter handle, Gallagher said, “There are number of women who are suffering with endo and pelvic pain in silence & without support due to lengthy delays in diagnosis. For such patients, our Endo and Pelvic pain clinics will be a crucial front door as it will help those who need answers and expertise”.
As per data presented by the government, one in nine women in Australia suffer from endometriosis, a painful, lifelong ailment that can be severely disabling. In addition to significant pelvic pain, sufferers may endure a variety of other symptoms that have an influence on their everyday life. The GP-led clinics will provide interdisciplinary care teams with more targeted support for diagnosis and treatment.
With the $16.4 million investment, specific GP clinics for endometriosis and pelvic pain will be established, enhancing women’s access to timely, specialized care in primary healthcare settings.
A new pelvic MRI scan has been included to the Medicare Benefits Scheme for a cost of $25.5 million as part of broader initiatives to promote women’s health and the management of endometriosis. The first MRI scan to look into problems that may influence fertility is one that is listed on the MBS. Over 16,000 women a year who are having trouble getting pregnant, as well as those who have severe endometriosis and other diseases that influence fertility, will get treatment and hope from it.
“One of the few good things that Morrison did as PM was to raise awareness of endometriosis. Establishing 16 dedicated clinics is a good start, but consider adding more if the demand shows more are needed”, people said on the social media site.
