After the business revealed a reorganization of its release calendar, Disney fans will have to be patient for a little longer to see some of the most anticipated upcoming blockbusters.
Jon Landau, the producer of Avatar, stated on Twitter that the filmmakers required additional time to finish the subsequent films.
Disney has not explained the delays at this time.
The decision was made amid a strike among Hollywood writers that has been going on for some time. The strike is forcing production shutdowns, which could affect release schedules.
The premiere of the Avatar movies, a science-fiction series on the fictitious moon of Pandora and was announced on Tuesday, is the event that will have the most significant impact on the calendar. The release date of Avatar 3 has been pushed out to December 19, 2026. Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 will now occur several years later, on December 21, 2029, and December 2031, respectively.
According to reports, director James Cameron, responsible for launching the first “Avatar” film in 2009, stated that he may not direct the fourth and fifth instalments. Cameron, who was 68 years old then, would be 77 years old by December 2031.
Avatar producer Jon Landau remarked on Twitter that “each Avatar film is an exciting but epic undertaking that takes time to bring to the quality level we as filmmakers strive for and audiences have come to expect.”
The films based on the Star Wars franchise represent the other major thrust in the schedule. One of the films in the series will now be released in May of 2026 instead of December 2025 as was initially planned, and another film will be added to the schedule for December of 2026. Since 2019, the production company has yet to unveil a new Star Wars movie.
A reorganization of most of Marvel’s series was also recently announced, with the most notable change being that the release date of Avengers: Kang Dynasty would be moved from May 2025 to May 2026.
Most films that Marvel will release have had their release dates pushed back by a few months. After the release of “Captain America: Brave New World” in July 2024 rather than May 2024, subsequent films in the “Fantastic Four” franchise will be “Thunderbolts” in December 2024, “Blade” in February 2025, and “Fantastic Four” in May 2025.
