Thousands gathered in Ho Chi Minh City today to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War, a pivotal moment in the nation’s history. The celebrations featured a grand military-civilian parade, aerial displays, and cultural performances, reflecting on the country’s journey from conflict to unity.
The event commenced with a 30-minute art performance, followed by a flag-saluting ceremony and speeches from top leaders, war veterans, and youth representatives. Vietnam’s Communist Party chief, To Lam, addressed the crowd, describing the victory as a “triumph of justice over tyranny,” echoing Ho Chi Minh’s sentiment that “Vietnam is one, the Vietnamese people are one.”
A highlight of the parade was the participation of 118 Chinese troops marching alongside Vietnamese soldiers and police officers, symbolizing the international support Vietnam received during its struggle for independence. The aerial display featured Russian-made fighter jets and helicopters, captivating spectators along Le Duan Street and other key city routes.
Despite the comprehensive strategic partnership between Vietnam and the United States, no U.S. government officials attended the parade. However, several American veterans and former war correspondents were present in the city ahead of the anniversary. Vietnam’s foreign ministry noted that guests from over 20 countries and organizations participated in the celebrations.
Beyond the parade, the city organized various activities to honor the occasion. Fireworks displays illuminated the sky at seven locations, including the Saigon River Tunnel and Dam Sen Cultural Park. Cultural and sporting events, such as the 37th Ho Chi Minh City Television Cycling Cup, exhibitions, and live performances, engaged both residents and visitors.
The anniversary serves as a moment of reflection on Vietnam’s transformation over the past five decades. Once marked by conflict and hardship, the nation has undergone significant economic reforms since 1986, evolving into a vibrant and dynamic society. While relations with the U.S. have improved, recent policy shifts have raised concerns among veterans and reconciliation advocates.
