China: Humanoid Robot Games highlight ambition, realities

Beijing played host to a bold experiment last week as it inaugurated the first-ever “World Humanoid Robot Games,” held at the monumental National Speed Skating Oval—originally built for the 2022 Winter Olympics—now repurposed to stage a showcase of China’s push into embodied artificial intelligence.

The three-day competition, running from August 15 to 17, featured more than 500 humanoid robots from over 280 teams, spread across 26 varied events including kickboxing, athletics, football, dance, cleaning, and medicine sorting. Among the highlights and lowlights: robotics students attempted boxing matches where one pint-sized fighter lost balance mid-kick and crashed dramatically to the floor—eliciting both laughter and winces from the audience. In a 1500-meter race, a robot’s head flew off mid-lap, underscoring the fragility of current designs.

Despite the slapstick moments, the event was not merely a spectacle. It served as a deliberate demonstration of China’s strategic ambitions to accelerate becoming a global leader in AI and robotics—especially amidst intensifying technological rivalry with the United States. The Chinese government’s commitment is underlined by bold funding initiatives: for instance, proposals totaling as much as 1 trillion yuan over five years aim to fuel the AI industry. Local governments, including Beijing and Shanghai, have also created 10 billion yuan industry funds to catalyze innovation.

Chinese robotics companies such as UBTech and Unitree are already making strides, bolstered by lower production costs compared to Western firms—some estimates suggest as much as one-third of the cost. Their robots, deployed in a range of competitive events, drew both acclaim and critique: the public was thrilled by the novelty, but experts cautioned that many essential capabilities—like safe, dexterous interaction in everyday environments—remain distant goals.

A related event earlier this summer offers further context. In June, China also hosted a fully autonomous three-a-side humanoid robot football match, where robots repeatedly tumbled or required stretchers, reminding observers that entertainment often masks technical shortcomings. Even when a university team emerged victorious in the final, commentators emphasized that real-world deployment—especially around vulnerable humans—requires caution and far-better performance.

Still, the enthusiasm remains palpable. The spectacle of robots dancing, boxing, and tumbling for a packed arena is part of a larger narrative: China sees embodied AI as more than just a technological frontier—it’s envisioned as a critical solution to demographic challenges like an ageing population and a shrinking workforce.

In sum, while today’s humanoid robots may appear jerky, unstable, or theatrical, the World Humanoid Robot Games serve as a vivid indicator of China’s ambitions.
