The recently signed Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and New Zealand is increasingly being viewed as a template for shaping a potential trade deal between India and Canada, as policymakers and trade experts assess its structure, scope, and speed of negotiation.
The India–New Zealand agreement, concluded in a record time of under a year, has been described as one of India’s fastest and most comprehensive bilateral trade pacts. It provides for complete duty-free access for Indian exports to the New Zealand market, covering thousands of product categories, while also opening Indian markets to a wide range of New Zealand goods through phased tariff reductions.
Apart from goods, the pact includes strong provisions for services, investment, and mobility, allowing easier visa norms and work opportunities for Indian professionals. New Zealand has also committed significant long-term investments in India, estimated at around $20 billion, further strengthening the economic partnership between the two countries.
Officials and analysts believe the structure of this agreement — combining tariff liberalisation with safeguards for sensitive sectors such as dairy and agriculture — could serve as a practical blueprint for India’s ongoing discussions with Canada. Trade experts point out that the New Zealand agreement demonstrates how negotiations can be fast-tracked without compromising on key national interests. It also highlights the importance of phased tariff reductions and clearly defined rules of origin, which can help prevent trade imbalances while encouraging exports.
Moreover, the India–New Zealand pact is being seen in the context of India’s broader push to strengthen economic ties with developed nations, particularly within strategic groupings like the Indo-Pacific and “Five Eyes” countries, which include Canada and New Zealand. This alignment is expected to enhance India’s integration into global supply chains and boost its export competitiveness.
