India and Singapore are advancing plans to establish a comprehensive roadmap for collaboration on a digital maritime corridor and environmentally sustainable shipping, signalling a deepening of bilateral ties in line with global decarbonisation efforts. According to officials, both countries are working on the framework for infrastructure development and operational mechanisms that will underpin this partnership, which is expected to reshape maritime connectivity and trade efficiency.
The proposed roadmap will form the basis of a future Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), with discussions currently focusing on key infrastructure requirements and investment details. These include planning for storage facilities, pipeline networks, bunkering systems and assessing future demand for green fuels, which are central to transitioning the shipping industry towards cleaner energy sources.
The initiative is part of a broader collaboration between the two nations aimed at reducing carbon emissions in the maritime sector, a critical priority as global shipping contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions. Officials emphasised that the effort aligns with international trends pushing for greener and more technologically advanced shipping practices.
The discussions are taking place alongside the Singapore Maritime Week, where India is participating in high-level engagements with global maritime stakeholders. The event has served as a platform to further refine cooperation strategies, particularly in areas such as digitalisation of shipping operations and adoption of low-emission technologies.
This evolving partnership builds upon earlier agreements between the two countries. A Letter of Intent on maritime digitalisation and decarbonisation had been signed previously, followed by a formal MoU in 2025 to establish a Green and Digital Shipping Corridor. That agreement laid the groundwork for collaboration on digital data exchange, research into emerging green technologies and development of infrastructure to support near-zero emission fuels.
Officials highlighted that the two countries bring complementary strengths to the table. India’s growing capacity in renewable energy and potential to produce cost-effective green fuels positions it as a key supplier, while Singapore’s status as a major global maritime and transshipment hub offers advanced logistics, bunkering infrastructure and innovation ecosystems.
The planned digital corridor is also expected to enhance data sharing and streamline maritime operations, enabling more efficient port management and trade flows. By integrating digital systems with sustainable shipping practices, the initiative aims to create a modern, resilient maritime network that can support future global trade demands.
As both countries continue to finalise the roadmap, the collaboration is being seen as a significant step towards building cleaner shipping routes and leveraging technology for smarter maritime operations. The partnership is likely to open new opportunities for investment, innovation and sustainable growth, while contributing to wider international goals of reducing the environmental impact of global shipping.
