Valencia, Spain’s third-largest city, is preparing to welcome thousands of athletes and visitors from across the globe as it hosts the 2026 Gay Games, the world’s largest international sporting event for LGBTQ+ participants. Scheduled to take place from June 27 to July 4, the competition is expected to highlight not only athletic excellence but also the city’s long-standing culture of inclusion and acceptance.
Established in 1982 by former Olympic decathlete Tom Waddell, the Gay Games were conceived as a response to the discrimination and homophobia Waddell experienced during his sporting career. The event was designed to create a welcoming environment where LGBTQ+ athletes could compete without fear of prejudice. Since its inception in San Francisco, the Games have been hosted by several globally recognised cities known for their openness and diversity, including Amsterdam, New York, Sydney and Paris.
This year, Valencia joins that list as it prepares to host more than 9,000 athletes from 75 countries competing across 39 sporting disciplines. Organisers estimate that nearly 40,000 spectators will travel to the city for the week-long event.
The Games come at a time when Spain is increasingly being recognised for its progressive stance on LGBTQ+ rights. The country recently topped European rankings for LGBTQ+ equality and protections, reflecting decades of legislative reforms supporting same-sex marriage and anti-discrimination measures. Valencia, while perhaps more widely known for its beaches, paella and striking architecture, has quietly developed a reputation as one of Europe’s most welcoming destinations for LGBTQ+ residents and visitors.
The city’s atmosphere of acceptance is evident in daily life, with same-sex couples openly expressing affection in public spaces and rainbow symbols commonly displayed by businesses. Popular gathering spots such as Pinedo Beach attract a diverse mix of visitors, while the city’s annual Pride celebrations continue to grow in scale. Organisers report that attendance has surged significantly over the years, with tourism linked to LGBTQ+ events also rising steadily.
Hosting Pride celebrations and the Gay Games within a short span of time provides Valencia with an opportunity to present its inclusive identity on an international stage. Sporting events and cultural programmes have been planned across 46 venues located throughout the city. Organisers say the city’s compact layout, extensive public transport network and more than 200 kilometres of cycling paths will allow participants to move easily between venues.
The opening ceremony on June 27 will feature a parade of nations, live performances and a ceremonial lighting event. A public 3-kilometre International Rainbow Memorial Run through the Jardín del Túria, one of Spain’s largest urban parks, will also mark the beginning of the Games.
Alongside sports competitions, a range of cultural activities has been scheduled, including art exhibitions, music performances and community celebrations. A special exhibition featuring works by local LGBTQ+ artists will run throughout the event, while concerts and themed social gatherings are expected to attract participants and visitors alike.
Beyond the Games, visitors are expected to explore Valencia’s vibrant LGBTQ+ districts. Areas such as Barrio del Carmen and Ruzafa have evolved into important cultural and social hubs, featuring queer-friendly hotels, cafés, bars and community spaces. These neighbourhoods also reflect the city’s historical journey from repression during the Franco era to becoming a symbol of diversity and inclusion in modern Spain.
As thousands of athletes and supporters prepare to descend on Valencia this summer, the city is poised to demonstrate how sport, culture and community can come together to celebrate diversity on a global stage.
