US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose a 100% tariff on imports from European countries that levy digital services taxes on American technology companies, escalating trade tensions between Washington and its European allies. The warning, issued through a post on his social media platform Truth Social, comes at a sensitive time as the United States and the European Union continue negotiations over broader trade issues.
Trump said any European nation introducing or maintaining a digital services tax targeting US technology firms would face immediate retaliatory tariffs. He asserted that such tariffs would override existing or future trade agreements between the United States and the affected countries. According to Trump, these taxes unfairly discriminate against American companies and amount to an attack on some of the country’s largest technology businesses.
Several European nations, including France, Italy and Spain, already impose digital services taxes on the revenues of major technology firms, while the United Kingdom also has a similar levy in place. European governments argue that multinational digital companies should pay taxes where they generate revenue rather than where they are headquartered, saying existing international tax rules do not adequately address the digital economy.
The European Commission defended its approach, maintaining that digital taxes are non-discriminatory and apply equally to all large companies regardless of their country of origin. EU officials also stressed that member states retain the sovereign right to design their own tax policies. At the same time, Brussels warned that it would respond swiftly and decisively if the United States introduced unilateral trade measures against European countries.
Trump’s latest warning has raised concerns over the possibility of another transatlantic trade dispute, particularly as both sides are working toward a broader trade agreement expected to address tariffs and market access. However, digital taxation has remained one of the most contentious issues in the negotiations and has not yet been resolved.
The US administration has consistently opposed digital services taxes, arguing that they disproportionately target American technology giants such as Amazon, Meta and Google. Washington has repeatedly maintained that such measures unfairly single out US companies while creating barriers to international trade.
Analysts believe the latest threat could complicate ongoing trade talks and increase uncertainty for businesses operating across the Atlantic. While Trump’s remarks reinforce his administration’s hardline approach to protecting American technology firms, European leaders have indicated they are unlikely to alter their tax policies under external pressure.
