Trade tensions between the United States and Canada have escalated further after US President Donald Trump threatened to impose additional tariffs on Canadian goods, accusing Ottawa of failing to control the wildfires whose smoke has spread across large parts of the United States. The remarks have drawn a sharp response from Canadian officials and criticism from climate experts, who argue that worsening wildfire seasons are driven by broader climatic factors rather than negligence by any single country.
In a strongly worded statement posted on his social media platform, Trump alleged that the United States was being “unnecessarily invaded” by polluted air originating from Canadian wildfires. He claimed the smoke had caused significant economic and public health costs for American communities and warned that these expenses would be factored into existing tariffs imposed on Canadian imports. Trump also indicated that he intended to speak with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, describing the recurring wildfire smoke as “totally unacceptable.”
The President argued that Canada’s forest management practices were inadequate and blamed the country for allowing large-scale wildfires to spread, leading to deteriorating air quality across several US states. Dense smoke from hundreds of active fires drifted across the border, prompting health advisories in parts of the Midwest and Northeast, where residents were urged to remain indoors and limit outdoor activities because of hazardous air conditions.
Canadian authorities, however, rejected suggestions that the crisis stemmed from poor management alone. Emergency Management and Community Resilience Minister Eleanor Olszewski said Canada has invested around C$12 billion in forest sustainability, wildfire prevention and emergency preparedness since 2020. She stressed that the country continues to prioritise the safety of affected communities while working closely with international partners, including the United States, in combating cross-border wildfires.
Prime Minister Mark Carney also called for greater international cooperation in addressing climate-related disasters instead of assigning blame. Canadian leaders maintained that wildfire smoke is a transboundary issue requiring coordinated action, noting that Canada has also experienced smoke drifting northward from wildfires burning in parts of the United States. Officials recently issued air quality advisories in British Columbia after smoke from fires in Washington and Oregon crossed the border.
Scientists criticised Trump’s comments, saying the increasing frequency and intensity of wildfires are closely linked to rising global temperatures, prolonged drought and extreme weather conditions associated with climate change. Wildfire experts noted that Canada’s vast forest landscape naturally experiences seasonal fires, but warmer and drier conditions have significantly increased their severity in recent years. They argued that no amount of conventional forest management alone could completely prevent such large-scale fires under extreme climatic conditions.
The latest dispute comes amid already strained trade relations between the neighbouring countries. The Trump administration has recently expanded tariffs on selected Canadian products, citing what it described as discriminatory trade practices affecting American industries. Canada has strongly opposed the measures, arguing they violate the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) and warning that it is prepared to pursue legal and diplomatic options to resolve the dispute.
Observers believe linking environmental disasters to trade penalties represents an unusual escalation in bilateral relations. While the United States has previously imposed tariffs over economic disagreements, incorporating wildfire-related costs into trade policy marks a new point of friction between the two allies.
Despite the heated rhetoric, officials from both countries continue to cooperate in wildfire response operations. Firefighters and emergency agencies have long shared personnel, equipment and technical expertise during severe wildfire seasons on either side of the border. Analysts say maintaining that cooperation will remain critical as North America faces increasingly severe wildfire seasons driven by changing climate patterns.
