South Korea’s Incheon International Airport has emerged as the world’s busiest airport for international passenger traffic during the first half of 2026, with the ongoing conflict in the Middle East contributing to a significant shift in global aviation patterns. Preliminary figures compiled by the Airports Council International (ACI) show that the airport handled 38.39 million international passengers between January and June, narrowly surpassing London’s Heathrow Airport and Singapore’s Changi Airport.
The development marks the first time Incheon has secured the top position since it began operations in 2001. Heathrow ranked second with 37.79 million international passengers, while Singapore Changi recorded 34.53 million. Incheon’s rise has been particularly notable given that it ranked 10th globally in 2002, climbed to fifth place in 2018 and reached third in both 2024 and 2025.
Officials attributed part of the surge to disruptions in air travel caused by the US-Iran conflict and the resulting instability in the Middle East. Traditionally important aviation hubs such as Dubai have seen their role affected by the conflict, prompting some connecting passengers and airlines to seek alternative routes through East Asia. Incheon International Airport Corporation said the geopolitical situation had contributed to the redirection of some transfer traffic towards the region.
At the same time, Incheon’s growth cannot be attributed solely to the Middle East conflict. International passenger traffic at the airport increased by 6.3 per cent compared with the previous year, while South Korea also experienced stronger international tourism. Foreign travellers represented 39.3 per cent of Incheon’s passenger traffic during the first six months of the year, compared with 35.2 per cent for the whole of 2025. Their share rose further to a record 44.4 per cent during the second quarter, with increasing visitor numbers from China and Japan identified as an important factor behind the growth.
The figures underline Incheon’s growing importance as a major international transit and tourism hub in Asia. The airport currently serves 101 airlines and connects South Korea with 183 cities, including 158 international passenger destinations. Its ability to accommodate the rising traffic has also been strengthened by a major expansion programme completed in late 2024, which increased its annual passenger-handling capacity to 106 million.
The changing global aviation landscape has also affected Heathrow. Britain’s main international airport handled a record 40 million passengers in total during the first half of 2026, including domestic travellers, making it the busiest first half in its history. However, passenger capacity to the Middle East fell substantially amid the regional conflict, while traffic towards the Asia-Pacific region increased. Heathrow has also recently lost its position as Europe’s busiest airport by total passenger numbers to Istanbul Airport, which recorded 8.15 million passengers in July compared with Heathrow’s 7.9 million.
For South Korea, the latest achievement adds to an already strong position in global aviation. The country is also home to the world’s busiest air route, according to aviation data provider OAG. The domestic connection between Seoul’s Gimpo Airport and Jeju Island had 14.4 million scheduled seats in 2025, more than any other air route worldwide.
The rise of Incheon highlights how geopolitical instability can rapidly reshape international aviation networks. While conflict in one region has disrupted established Middle Eastern hubs, airports in East Asia have benefited from the redirection of passengers, alongside the continuing growth in tourism. Incheon’s record performance therefore reflects a combination of changing travel patterns, expanding connectivity, rising foreign visitor numbers and the airport’s increased capacity.
Kim Beom-ho, acting president of Incheon International Airport Corporation, credited the achievement to the combined efforts of the government, the public and airport employees. The latest ranking places Incheon at the centre of an evolving global aviation network, demonstrating how shifts in international travel routes can quickly alter the balance among the world’s major airport hubs.
