The issue has also exposed differences among Canadian provinces. Alberta and Saskatchewan have continued to sell US alcoholic products, while most other provinces have maintained restrictions. Saskatchewan subsequently announced a 50% tariff on American alcohol beginning September 8, illustrating how provincial responses have continued to evolve as the trade confrontation intensifies.
The alcohol dispute is significant because the industry itself has become caught between two governments pursuing much larger economic objectives. Producers on both sides of the border have an interest in restoring normal trade, while political leaders have treated access to the alcohol market as leverage in negotiations over tariffs and market access.
