Britain’s railway network is facing increasing disruption from rising summer temperatures, with extreme heat posing risks to tracks, overhead power systems and signalling equipment, according to a recent assessment of the challenges facing the country’s rail infrastructure. As heatwaves become more frequent and intense, railway operators are being urged to strengthen infrastructure and invest in measures that can reduce the impact of high temperatures on train services.
Although railways are built to withstand significant variations in temperature, prolonged periods of extreme heat can create a number of problems. Steel rails expand when temperatures rise and, under severe conditions, can develop distortions known as “sun kinks”. Such warping can alter the alignment of tracks and create safety risks, particularly for trains travelling at high speeds. To reduce the danger, railway operators may have to impose temporary speed restrictions during periods of extreme heat, potentially causing delays and disruption to passengers.
The problem is not limited to railway tracks. Overhead electrical lines that supply power to trains are also affected by high temperatures. As metal expands, the lines can become loose and sag, increasing the possibility of coming into contact with trees or other obstacles. Modern systems can be fitted with mechanisms such as automatic tensioning equipment, balancing weights and springs, which help compensate for thermal expansion. However, older sections of the network have not necessarily been equipped with these technologies, leaving them more vulnerable during heatwaves.
Signalling infrastructure presents another challenge. Electronic equipment used to control railway operations is often installed inside metal cabinets located alongside tracks. During periods of extreme heat, temperatures inside these enclosures can rise considerably, potentially reaching levels that cause sensitive electronic components to malfunction or fail. Such failures can affect railway operations and contribute to delays, particularly when several systems are simultaneously under stress because of high temperatures.
Railway authorities are consequently exploring new methods of protecting equipment from excessive heat. Southeastern Railway, for instance, has been testing a passive cooling device known as IsoMat. The system is designed to attach to a signalling cabinet and remove heat without relying on conventional powered cooling equipment. It uses sealed internal channels containing a liquid that evaporates and subsequently condenses, transferring heat away from sensitive electronic components and helping to maintain safer operating temperatures.
Some railway operators have also adopted relatively simple measures to limit the amount of heat absorbed by infrastructure. In some locations, sections of railway track have been painted white so that they reflect more sunlight and remain cooler than conventional dark steel surfaces. Such interventions form part of a broader effort to reduce the vulnerability of railway infrastructure as temperatures rise.
Experts have stressed that heat-related problems on railways are not entirely new. However, their increasing frequency is making climate adaptation a more urgent requirement. Infrastructure that was designed around historical weather conditions may face greater pressure as the climate changes and periods of extreme heat become more common.
The experience of recent summers has highlighted the need for railway authorities to look beyond short-term responses such as speed restrictions and emergency repairs. Long-term investment in heat-resistant infrastructure, upgraded electrical systems, improved signalling protection and more effective monitoring could help prevent disruptions before they occur.
The growing pressure on the railway network also underlines the wider challenge posed by climate change to transport infrastructure. Railways remain an essential part of Britain’s transport system, but their ability to operate reliably will increasingly depend on how effectively infrastructure can adapt to changing weather conditions.
With hotter summers expected to remain a feature of the changing climate, investment in resilience could become increasingly important. Rather than responding to heat-related failures only after they occur, railway authorities face growing pressure to anticipate the effects of extreme temperatures and modernise vulnerable sections of the network. The objective will be to ensure that hotter summers do not translate into more frequent delays, speed restrictions and interruptions to rail services.
