Iran is facing an increasingly severe economic crisis, with soaring food prices, a rapidly weakening currency, fuel shortages and declining purchasing power putting growing pressure on households across the country. The situation has deteriorated further as the United States launches a new sanctions campaign aimed at cutting Iran off from the remaining links of its economy and increasing pressure on the government in Tehran.
The latest US campaign, described by the Trump administration as “Operation Economic Outcast”, comes at a time when Iran’s economy is already under enormous strain following years of sanctions, restrictions on oil exports and the continuing conflict in the region. Washington says the objective of the campaign is to target Iran’s financial connections and force the country towards negotiations. However, the immediate impact is expected to be felt most strongly by ordinary Iranians, who are already struggling to afford basic necessities.
Food prices have risen dramatically in recent months. Vegetable oil was reportedly 383% more expensive in August than it was a year earlier, while egg prices increased by 294%. Chicken prices rose by 177% and red meat by 148%. The sharp increase has significantly altered household spending patterns, with many families reducing their consumption of meat and other relatively expensive food items.
Iran’s currency has also suffered a major decline. On August 23, the US dollar reached approximately 2 million Iranian rials on the open market, marking a new record. Three days later, Iran’s Statistical Centre reported that annual inflation had reached 84.4% in August, while the rolling annual average stood at around 65%. The collapse in purchasing power has left many households unable to maintain their previous standard of living.
The economic difficulties are increasingly visible in everyday life. Families are purchasing fewer goods, changing their diets and delaying expenses that were once considered routine. Demand for red meat reportedly fell by about 50% in April compared with the same month last year. At the same time, increased consumption of cheaper alternatives such as potatoes has contributed to shortages.
The shortage of foreign currency is also affecting access to medicines and other imported products. Although medicines remain available through unofficial markets, supplies have become increasingly difficult to obtain. For many Iranians, economic concerns have shifted from long-term purchases such as homes and cars to simply ensuring that there is enough food and money to last until the end of the month.
Fuel supplies have added another layer to the crisis. Long queues were reported at petrol stations in Tehran and Mashhad, with several stations closing. Authorities attributed the disruption partly to panic buying following rumours of a possible increase in petrol prices. There have also been reports of damage to oil storage facilities during the conflict.
The possibility of increasing fuel prices has become politically sensitive in Iran. The government is already concerned about public anger, particularly because a sharp increase in petrol prices in November 2019 triggered widespread protests and violence. Officials are therefore facing a difficult choice between reducing the cost of fuel subsidies and avoiding another wave of social unrest.
Fuel smuggling has further complicated the situation. An Iranian official recently acknowledged that politically connected interests were involved in the trade, making it difficult for the government to take decisive action. The admission has fuelled criticism of the authorities at a time when the country is struggling to manage shortages and rising prices.
Iranian officials have increasingly framed economic hardship as part of the country’s wider confrontation with the United States. Citizens have been encouraged to reduce fuel consumption, avoid unnecessary travel and increase domestic production. Some officials have even urged young people to produce goods needed by themselves and society, an approach that has drawn comparisons with unsuccessful economic policies pursued in China during the Mao era.
At the heart of Iran’s economic problems is the country’s difficulty in selling its oil abroad. US sanctions and restrictions on trade have reduced Tehran’s access to international markets and foreign currency. Iran has relied heavily on countries such as China to purchase its crude, but Washington is increasing pressure on companies and financial institutions that continue to do business with Tehran. China has opposed the US sanctions campaign and remains a key economic partner for Iran.
The latest sanctions therefore come at a particularly difficult moment for Iran. While the Trump administration hopes that economic pressure will force Tehran to make concessions, the worsening conditions could also deepen public hardship without necessarily producing the political outcome Washington seeks. The Iranian government, meanwhile, faces the challenge of maintaining economic stability, controlling public anger and securing enough revenue to keep essential services running.
With inflation approaching unprecedented levels and living standards continuing to decline, the economic crisis is becoming an increasingly important factor in Iran’s political calculations. The government may ultimately face growing pressure to seek diplomatic solutions that could ease sanctions and restore access to international trade.
