Apple is preparing one of the most significant upgrades in its history of voice assistant technology by transforming Siri into a fully integrated artificial intelligence chatbot later this year, in a bid to better compete with offerings from rivals like OpenAI and Google. The move marks a strategic pivot for the iPhone maker, which has lagged behind competitors in advanced generative AI capabilities despite years of efforts to bolster its own systems.
The next iteration of Siri — currently codenamed “Campos” — will ditch the traditional voice-assistant format many users are familiar with and instead offer a conversational AI experience woven directly into Apple’s operating systems. According to people familiar with the plans, Apple will embed this new chatbot deeply across iPhone, iPad and Mac devices, replacing the existing Siri interface and allowing users to interact both by voice and text.
Users will still summon the feature in familiar ways, such as saying “Hey Siri” or pressing the side button on their iPhone or iPad. But rather than providing short, scripted responses, the revamped Siri will be capable of engaging in back-and-forth dialogue that more closely resembles interactions with leading chat AI products. This shift is aimed at addressing long-standing criticisms that Siri lacks the conversational depth and contextual understanding found in competitors like ChatGPT or Google’s Gemini.
Apple’s broader artificial intelligence platform has faced challenges in recent years. The company’s “Apple Intelligence” features, first introduced in 2024, added more context awareness and expanded Siri’s ability to perform device-based tasks — such as finding content or performing actions across apps — but stopped short of delivering genuine chatbot functionality. With Campos, Apple appears poised to push those capabilities even further by offering responses that can interpret complex queries, summarise information and potentially generate various types of content.
Reports indicate the new chatbot will be powered by advanced AI models developed through a multi-year partnership with Google, leveraging technology based on Google’s Gemini platform. Apple and Google are even in discussions to host parts of the system on Google’s servers, which could signal a significant shift from Apple’s longstanding preference for processing user requests on its own hardware or private cloud infrastructure.
The overhaul of Siri is expected to be a central element of Apple’s software updates in 2026, including iOS 27, iPadOS 27 and macOS 27. Industry observers say Apple plans to unveil the new chatbot at its Worldwide Developers Conference in June, with a full release scheduled for this fall.
This initiative comes at a moment when conversational AI has become a core battlefield in the tech industry. OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini have gained massive user bases and expanded into numerous applications beyond simple question-answering, prompting Apple to rethink its approach. The Cupertino-based company has historically emphasised privacy and tight integration over standalone chatbot experiences, but pressure from competitors and shifting user expectations appears to have accelerated its push into next-generation AI.
